    Potterton Netaheat Profile

I have 2 questions regarding our boiler. Unit in question is a Potterton netaheat profile - which was installed at time of property build around 16 years ago. There are a few threads suggesting this model has safety concerns - yet not clear why that might be the case - whether down to...

    Gate Valves

Softus, good items for consideration - thank you. I'd consider due to application (gravity feed from loft) that a ball would work OK - and to be honest - I wouldn't know a good brand of gate valve vs a bad one.

    Gate Valves

Thanks for the input guys. So from everything mentioned, pro's and cons, there appear no drawbacks to a ball type valve, aside from any potential complications that it may introduce due to different lengths between exisiting and replacement valve. Right, will try to track down a full bore...

    Tanking & Battens

Bal will not recommend their White Star product for tiles that large. You may get away with it, but to be safe I'd recommend a cement based - though that may add priming requirements if you're going onto a plaster finish. It will however likely save time in the long run and costs are typically...

    Gate Valves

That's what I was hoping you'd say :) So why would these have not been fitted originally?

Base pattern showing through surface on new tiles

Jefoss, I think you need to work on technique - no mention of sucking through teeth in your assesement of works required. Whenever I've had someone try to soften the blow of an unplanned work requirement - they typcailly suck through their gritted teeth, sometimes rubbing or scatching chin...

    Gate Valves

Hopefully a simple question for the knowledgeable ... Our property is around 15 years old and the feeds from loft storage tank for cold and also the feed to hot water tank, can each be isolated via gate valves in the airing cupboard. Whilst fitting some new taps over weekend, it became...

    Tanking & Battens

Unless you're using acnchor bolts a batten pinned shouldn't leave a hole that's too much of a worry - I'd simply plug it with adhesive when you're tiling the final row. You can however as you suggest use silicoen - or preferably the tanking solution - though it adds delay to finishing the job...

Fein tool for grout removal - can you help?

How large a job are you tackling The Bosch copy of the Fein is half the price, and would likely be more than up to the job for such a task I'd not consider Bosch as trade duty, but if you truly have something like this task in mind for it - it would be more than adequate.

    tiling around shower / bath

My personal take is - if you've already got the wall bare and a nice fresh surface, why not use a small tanking kit - it adds no more than 24 hours to the job (which in many DIY implementations is not too challenging) and around 30 quid. It may be that the the bare board would be fine, but for...

    Rushed shower preparation.....now what?

No water will pass through the grout - are you recommending Epoxy grout then? Regular grouts will allow moisture to penetrate - and that plaster board will be like a sponge when it does. So you can restart with tanked surface or continue and change grout requiremtns to a fully sealing...

    bathroom dimmer and fan (again!)

I ran a regular dimmer for mine. Consider the fan has a constant live and neutral with the switch being an either on or off trigger - so the voltage is limited byt the dimmer - as lowest light settings the fan will likely not switch in, but as you turn dimmer brightness up, the switched live...

    retiling bathroom few questions please

Are those tiles and border mosaics from Wickes? Look just like the Travertine effect jobbies that I just redid our ensuite with - gotta love Wickes for tiles when they do a clearance line.

    waterproof grade chipboard

Personally, never seen water proof chipboard - this would imply that it was either a barrier to any moisture penetration, or at a minimum, not affected by moisture. I'd use WBP ply - stronger and will be worry free.

    spacers in or out

For me it's out, just to ensure none of the tiles get placed on top of one which makes for messy spacer repositioning etc Slide tile into place, butt up to adjoining, then slide out enough to insert the spacer leg as a peg - remove once adhesive has gone off.

    Strange things happening with grouting

If you scrape just a mm or so of the stained grout - is the material it exposes underneath clean and free of any staining ? It looks like something leeching through from behind the adhesive / grout, but that doesn't seem to fit with the symptoms you've described. What type of Grout (brand...

    Mixer shower calibration

A pic might help understand the type of fitting you're working with And if nothing esle - it will likely increase views of your thread, with the intent of increasing the chances of an expert wandering through :)

Tiling a wall with 600x600 tiles

Wow, that wall will need to be very smooth when skimmed if you're to keep the edges of the tiles even and no corners projecting furhther away than those adjoining it. As for adhesive, I'd suggest a single part flex, given the boarded walls in use. Needs to be cement based as any premix will...

    Bathroom fan extraction rate

Centrifugal would be a good choice. Many will flow in excess of 100 l/h through flex pipe over 3m or so. If you need more, a 5" can be had for not much additional cost and soil pipe can be used to make the air flow more efficient...

Gas Hob Connection - Kitchen Refit

I'm about to start tearing out the current kitchen and fitting new cabinets. Part of the remodel involves moving the 5 burner hob along the worktop about 800 mm. My question is, would a typical gas fitter be happy if I were to complete all the pipework and termination to the hob, leaving the...
