What varnish for a door step?

I am just about to fit a new hardwood door frame for my front door. I am painting the uprights and top section in exterior White Satin, but I want to varnish the step in something that won't show scuffs and scratches like white paint would. Would Yacht Varnish be the best product to use...

    cost of 2-storey extension

That is fair enough, but for DIY enthusiasts, who want to do a large portion of the work themeselves, what would be an accepted approximate costing p/m per floor for having just the shell built. If I wanted a 2 storey 40msq shell built, (No windows, No electrics, No plumbing, No plastering...

New Opening in old wall - What Cavity Closers

I am installing a new front door in the front of my house, and will be cutting through the existing cavity wall to make the hole. When I cut through the wall, the 100mm cavity will obviously become exposed and need to be filled with a cavity closers. The new lintel will bridge the top...

    cost of 2-storey extension

How long is a piece of string? How much of the job are you going to do yourself ? I have embarked on a similar sized extension (7.3 x 3.2) on the end of my house. I got a quote from a local guy to build the shell, and he said £38K which I thought was extortionate seeing as that didn't...

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

Yes it would, but the wife wants the back portion of the garage to be partitioned off so that the boys can have it as a playroom/mess/den for a few years, and then once they grow out of it, I'll convert it into a utility room. There is method to my madness, but for the moment, I'll just build...

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

This thread has gone totally off topic. The question is - can I fit a window with a uPVC frame, in an intergal garage ? I do not know if the window needs to be fire rated and so I asked the question. My assumption is that in the event of a fire in the garage, the uPVC frame could melt...

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

Went through the regs last night, and couldn't find anything about garage windows, let alone sizes.

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

Garyo My problem is because I want to have a window between a Garage and a Living Space. If both of your rooms are classed as living space, then Building Control won't have a problem with you leaving the original windows in there. Cheers Gary

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

My Conservatory (that I haven't built yet) will go across the back of the garage. I wanted to partition the back 3m of the garage off and have it as a play room, with a door and window going into the conservatory. Unfortunately though, because the garage is classed as a garage, so would...

What cavity insulation for my extension?

That is an interesting point. I had assumed that you could do the bricks first, then the blocks, then slide the insulation in afterwards. Is that a wrong assumption, is it just fiddly, or is there a technical reason why you can't do it?

Can I fit uPVC windows in an integral garage?

Another question relating to my extension ..... Do the Fire regs allow me to install uPVC windows in the Integral garage. I'd like some natural light in there for when I am working on things, but am I allowed to have uPVC frames ? The wall that the windows would be in is on the property...

How do I acheive a 'Fire Rated' Ceiling

I was having a look through the regs earlier, and couldn't find the info I needed in simple enough terms .................... mind you I was looking at it at work at lunchtime, so was in a bit of a hurry.

How do I acheive a 'Fire Rated' Ceiling

My 2 storey extension will have an integral garage on the ground floor, and 2 bedrooms above it. Can anyone tell me how I can achieve the necessary fire rating for the ceiling, in material terms? Strength wise, the wooden joists need to be 146mm min, but I have read on another post that...

What cavity insulation for my extension?

Cheers ajrobb Put that way, it doesn't seem to make much sense going for the deep joists. If I put shallower joists in, I can drop the ceiling joists a bit, and give a bit more head room in the loft room.

What cavity insulation for my extension?

Thanks for the input guys. You have confirmed what I was expecting to hear, so I am happy with that. And thanks for the U Calcs as well - I need to do that to show the inspector. As for the insulation in the floor, TRADA timber tables say that I only need to have 145mm deep joists to get...

What cavity insulation for my extension?

Hi All. I am embarking on a 2 storey extension coming out 3m from the gable end of my property. Downstairs will be a garage, and upstairs will be 2 bedrooms. I remember from years ago that bedrooms above garages were notoriously cold, so I am planning on going over the top in terms of...

    Lounge Modernisation

Good point, and well done for picking up on it. I have been looking into remote control signal repeaters, but haven't got one yet. Behind the very right hand door is the Cable TV Box, DVD Player and Home Cinema Amp. Under normal watching conditions, we just leave that door open. The PS3...

    Which Blocks 3.6Kn or 7KN

Cool, that is the answer I had hoped for. I need about 40 blocks to get from the top of the foundation up to DPC. so will probably just order 1 full pallet of 7Kn concrete ones, use them until they run out and then get aerated ones for the rest of the build. Cheers Gary

    Which Blocks 3.6Kn or 7KN

I am about to embark on my 2 storey extension. The wall is going to be a very conventional cavity one, with Bricks on the Outside, Blocks on the inside, and insulation in the cavity. My question is, what sort of blocks should I be using on the inner skin? Concrete or 'Aircrete' , and...

    Lounge Modernisation

Thanks Dan. The kitchen cabinets were 'Drawer line' from B&Q, but I cut them down to get rid of the drawer, making them lower and look less 'Kitchen' like. I am really pleased with the overall effect.
