can you not? rough up the existing paintwork and apply one of those aluminium (sp?) undercoat primers and then repaint?? (don't know if this would work but i'm quite interested in this myself as we have some doors that were stained..... and then painted over at some point - the stain is...

i've done this with cigarette burns - scrape as much as the cr*p off as possible, then find an area that isn't noticeable and shave off some fibres (just a few from here and there - not down to the pile just so it doesn't look any different from the rest of the carpet) then glue these fibres...

hmmm talking of rendering... i'm throwing up a garden wall at present (on a brick section at the mo) but i'm going to do a breeze block construction (about 3 high) and then render it (i've found out i'm not very good at laying bricks so once my little section of brick is finished i'm moving...

hey all have had a quick trawl around the archives but couldn't find anything so........ what's the method to stop stairs squeaking when being used?? we can't get underneath as that'll entail far too much work..... i was going to screw down what's screwable and bang in wood wedges...

sorry dude that was my only idea.... unless (a very long shot) these 'grey' patches are a different texture to the rest of the floor? maybe go over them lightly with some 120+ grade paper?

have you wiped over the boards with a clean cloth? the 'grey patches' could just be 'excess' stain that has dried on the surface of the wood - if this is the case you should be able to wipe em off with a little bit of work (you should really give newly stained floors a wipe over anyway)...

if it's going to be bare for a length of time why not put an old carpet/black bags over it to keep the light out and kill anything that tries to grow? gotta be better than poisoning the patch.... maybe?

i took a walls worth of cork tiles down the other year.... brought about 60% of the plaster off with them (right back to the brick work) - what a mess!!! had to re-skim.... also took two ceilings of polystyrene off - they came off easily enough with a scrapper...... but what was...
