Definately sounds like a loose screw or terminal, does the rcd show signs of discoloration or has any of the cable covering or the rcd melted ? If any of the above are visable isolat from the mains supply and replaice asap. As daytona said you've been lucky but the rcd has done its job...

Firstly do not switch the Earth connection, they are there for safety and should not be switched. The extra terminals are probably auxillary terminals, just ignore them. The terminals you will connect into are L1 Brown Live in - L2 Blue Neutral in T1 Brown Live out - T2 Blue Neutral out...

Just a couple of thing there to bear in mind: 1. Ensure that the socket you will be connecting into is'nt a spur and that it is on a ring. 2. Make sure you can still access the socket for the hood. 3. This work is notifiable to your local council.
