Chimney style cooker hoods - good and bad makes?

After many smokey days in my kitchen I have funally got round to buying an extractor for my kitchen. I'm after a black 110cm chimney style one and have been pretty astounded by the high costs! My choice of makes are: Stoves, Rangemaster, Belling and TurboAir (looks lie a rip off of...

Struggling with gaps on solid oak

I'm about halfway through laying (floating) my solid oak floor and am having real problems with gaps. Some of the boards are slightly different widths (probably only a mm or so) but this means that the board next to it has to go at a slight angle. I'm concerned that as I go along this is...

Solid Oak floor - stop at door or one long length?

I thought so - many thanks woodyoulike. As a cheeky additional question is any PVA wood glue OK? Is it advisable to get waterproof stuff? Was originally on "No nonsense pva woodglue (water resistant).... But now bought this...

Solid Oak floor - stop at door or one long length?

Presently floating my solid oak planked floor (with all advice from on here thanks). I have a room 6m long that leads into my hall (another 5m long) Should I stop at the door and put in a "joining strip" to allow for some expansion or can I lay the entire length? (ie total length 11m)...

putting a hatch into a wood floor

Excellent - many thanks. I'm gluing my first row tonight! I need to do some thinking as the loose end of the hatch will need supporting and the floor is going onto chipboard (floating) so I'm assuming I will have to glue the lid onto the chipboard (or something the same width) to get it...

putting a hatch into a wood floor

Many thanks, the hatch will be near a wall so I can just end my floor a bit early to leave a gap for the hatch. I'm liking the hidden door idea but don't quite get the hinges you will use - any link to piccy? I will probably lift the hatch about 6 times a year (audio cables etc) - so if I...

putting a hatch into a wood floor

I'm just about to brave fitting my solid oak floor. I have a decent gap under the chipboard in which I have hidden all my wiring but would like access to them in the future. The obvious choice is to put a hatch under the TV where everything disappears into the floor but I'm struggling to...

2 Qu's-fixing to chipboard & laying same direction a joi

I considered it but would be a big job and the current chipboard goes under all the walls etc which I would not be able to do with ply. The chipboard has been ok for prolly ten years or so would really rather not. I'm still a bit nervous about floating it! Is it worth me 'splashing out'...

2 Qu's-fixing to chipboard & laying same direction a joi

Hi all, been trawling through the search engine and just wanted to clarify a couple of things. I'm installing a solid oak, 18mm thick, 140mm wide planks from Howdens. They are going into a room 6m by 4m and on to suspended chipboard. The general advise seems to be to float the floor...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

Great to have the input everyone - its very difficult to not be taken for a ride on these things. All I need to do is somehow get people to come round to give me quotes! I know its difficult to do but can anyone even give me a ball park figure of what I should be paying? Work to be...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

Hmmmm......from that am I to assume that it is likely I will need new pipework in? They did some sums and reckoned that the Potterton was pushing out about 22kw. I have just had half my day wasted waiting for two gas engineers to turn up for quotes - then when I called to ask where they...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

Should that be not more than £2k or expect to pay more than £2k? I have had a quote this morning for £3500 (max quote he reckon more likely £3200)- than included running new gas pipework from mains (ie taking up part of the floor) and putting a Worcester 28 in the cupboard. I have had...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

The airing cupboard does not back onto an external wall - just the bedroom. Is that going to restrict me from putting a combi in there? Could I just put one where the old one is? The vent is already there...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

Yeah the hammer was left by previous owner as well....seems to be the main tool he used for all his installations! Still not decided what to do....will see what boiler man says tomorrow but having just worked out my budget I might be covering the old boiler for now with a view to maybe...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

Pictures..... Boiler - right next to hundred year old oak church door...very fitting. Considering using kitchen top level cupboards along this wall bit to hide it. Water cupboard - there is presently a (pretty rubbish) power shower hooked up. I have no idea what everything does...

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

lol Care to expand on that?!! In the future I intend to let the flat so need to be sure its upto the job and reliable. Assuming that actually changing just the boiler (ie same location) is pretty simple - just remove water tank.

Re-doing kitchen - should I replace and move my boiler?

I'm looking at a new kitchen soon in my new flat. It has a Potterton Suprima 80 boiler in a terrible position (right next to door). I've only been in the flat a few days but i seem to run out of hot water very quickly (after 2 showers I had to boil the kettle to shave). I used to have a...
