Guttering and Water Butt for Garden Shed

I bought the miniline guttering from B&Q and it’s been fine. I sawed off some wood to reduce the overhang and attached the guttering to the shed directly. I don’t know if this is the recommended method, but it’s simple and worked fine here. I think the weight of the water will only really...

    gparted

gparted is a great little no-nonsense tool and is what everyone at work uses. I used it to create an ext3 partition on my NTFS external hard disk. I can then backup my recorded TV from my Humax foxsat.

    Why dont snails eat weeds?

I grow blackberries up against 3 fence panels and they're the most productive fruit we have. We keep them well trained back to stop the kids touching them, but you can get thornless varieties as well. Maybe the nettles are to make plant food, although surely there's some in the wild nearby...

    Why dont snails eat weeds?

Are you watering the plants in the evening? They could be attracted by the water if so. If I was a snail I'd want to eat a tender salad leaf as opposed to something tougher, but I think they're not that clever and it's more based on scent. (Weeds are just plants in the wrong place).

    Waterlogged Garden

Are we talking water on the surface? Have you tried aerating the whole lawn with a fork? Alan Titchmarsh then suggested brushing sharp sand into the holes, but some people disagree saying sand + clay = concrete lawn. See 1 hour 45 into: How To Be A Gardener (Part A)

    TV warranties and John Lewis

Our Panasonic LCD tv recently went faulty after 3 years. Having bought it from John Lewis, it came under the 5 year guarantee. It was looked at by the repair men, but deemed not worth fixing as needed most of it replacing. We were offered a new TV with much better technology in than the...

    Bad Gardening

Are you sure it isn't just the weather? The grass is probably just dormant and not dead and will recover when we get rain again. All the lawns round here are brown, apart from a few idiots wasting ridiculous amounts of water  Normally there's no justification in watering grass...

    Hosepipe ban - enforceable?

It’s not that the ban will make a massive difference; it’s more trying to encourage less waste. We should act as if there’s a permanent hosepipe ban. I bet they're looking to give some fines out to show they mean business and someone's going to be very unlucky. Water is not free and takes...

    mouldy squashes and courgettes

This can happen with the first few off the plant. I always seem to lose the first few courgettes(even removing the flowers), but the later ones when the plants are fully established are fine. If it carries on, maybe they're not getting pollinated and need pollinating by hand? If it...

    Vans parked outside your house

I'd have to say that there's a lot of people out there that'd agree with that. Having a load of vans parked everywhere, or general parking problems, is going to lower the value of your house. There's a few tradesmen with vans on my street, but they park them on their drives and there's no...

    Taters in a tub?

Some compost would help, but potatoes will grow in any old soil. I wouldn't go and buy compost especially for this. Just using left over shop-bought potatoes in soil from your garden should work. You need to add the soil to "earth up" as they grow. It is late, but a bin or container can...

Costs of Papal visit to rise.

The pope is sitting there with the key to the secret Vatican archives that implicate the Catholic Church in war crimes and helping Nazis escape to Argentina. I don't think that the head of an organisation guilty of war crimes should be allowed here. Of course, it's suggested that the USA and...

Neighbours slaughtering chickens / turkeys in garden

The authorities should sort this out. As a backup though, have you read the small print of the covenants on your property? Ours, for example, says you're not allowed to keep chickens. There may be something in there.

Dish water / grey water for the garden ?

Some use very diluted fairly liquid to spray trees infested with aphids. I think as long as you're watering the soil it should be OK. Of course, this is what you should do anyway as you can actually get the water to the plants and having wet leaves encourages disease. Down the street they...

What do I do with England flag if England lose?

Well I saw at least 5 at the side of the road driving in to work today. They must be left there for a new council rubbish collection service

    New Lawn Mower Need

Just out of interest; why does it have to be petrol? Do you have a lot of trees in the lawn or something? That's the size of my back garden and I use a standard electric mower with an 15m extension lead with no problems. Wouldn't an electric be better for the environment, and more...

    using grass as mulch

I've used grass clippings when nothing else has been to hand during hot weather. I'm sure I've read not to do it, but it worked fine. You don't use lawn weed and feed do you? It could harm the plants. There's also the school of thought that the grass clippings should be left on the lawn...
