    Oak: Wax, oil etc

Hi Chaps and Chapesses. I have just had some oak window board installed in my new kitchen. I've been reading up on the different types of treatment for oak such as oil, wax, varnish etc but I'm unsure on which direction to go. I appreciate that there is an element of personal taste involved...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Ree, You are over analyzing the situation. There is also no need for you to get personal. You seemingly calling into question my ability to manage is quite unnecessary. I have advised that I am currently unable to get photos taken in order to post them up. Please accept this. There should...

    Sand & Cement plaster

Ree, If you re-read the OP and then my response, I'm sure you'll see that I was not offering advice, merely offering some clarification. I specified that I was not a builder and unable to offer proper advice. I hope this clears things up. All the best to you ree. Hike

To explain, I've not been anywhere near the property to take any photographs since starting this thread.

    Sand & Cement plaster

ree, I see nothing wrong with my reply to the OP. Ludmilla had left a post which had gone unanswered for a week. This can be disheartening when you just want a bit of advice. I did specify from the outset that I was not a builder and unable to give proper advice. If all I achieved by...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

ree, I am fully aware that I am yet to post the requested pics. This is simply down to circumstances. I'm sure you understand that sometimes things don't always go to plan. Kind regards

    Sand & Cement plaster

Hi Ludmilla. I'm not a builder either, but I believe what he means is to first render your bricks using a sand/cement mix and then to plaster over the top of that. That is what you would paint on once dry. Hope this helps and I'm sure a plasterer will be along soon to give you proper advice.

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Thanks Joe-90. It seems now that all I need to do is decide when to have them back to plaster the wall again. I don't want to do it too soon as I'll end up in the same position. They are reluctant to make the decision themselves. Obviously the longer the bricks a free from plaster the faster...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

I've had a word with the builder and he has agreed to removed all of the plaster from the affected area. When I asked about having the wall rendered before the new plaster going up, he said that it was a very 'old school' thing to do and was unnecessary. He mentioned 'bonding' and 'new...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

The leak has definitely been fixed. It was where an old lead pipe was connected to a copper pipe. The whole section has been replaced. Plus the plaster is drying, it's just taking an extremely long time.

As soon as I'm able to take some I will and post them up here for you to see. Thanks stevethespreader. You have been a great help. (y)

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Thank you very much for that. I will be having all of the plaster taken off in order to speed up the drying of the brickwork. Then I'll ensure that the whole wall is undercoated with a render first and then the plaster can be applied. I hope I have this all right!!

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Ok thanks. I believe the lower part of the wall had render on it originally and that this was skimmed over. The rest of the wall was hard plastered (is this the correct terminology?) i.e he plastered straight onto the wall. I will ask him for the full details. Please excuse my ignorance but...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

stevethespreader, I'm afraid I know nothing about plastering. It's one of those trades that is just best left to the pros imo. If hacking it all off is what is needed then I will certainly have it done. Would the whole of the wall need rendering first? As in floor to ceiling? Or does it...

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

I'm almost certain that no render was applied first. If they were to render over the brick work whilst it was still wet, would it not trap the moisture in? Or does it not work like that? Thank you all for you help so far. This forum is ace!

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Undercoat? Do you mean what type of plaster was applied first? I'm sorry, I'm not too clued up on plastering. I will find out though.

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Yes I can get those pics taken. It is a solid brick wall. The floor is currently OSB board laying across the joists. It has been about 3 - 4 weeks since it was re-plastered. The plaster they used I believe was Thistle Multi-finish gypsum plaster. Thank you guys.

    Saturated bricks and wet plaster

Thanks for your reply ree. The burst pipe was discovered as I was about to start having my kitchen replaced. The wall in question is an outside rendered wall. The old plaster was removed and a dehumidifier set to work. The builder (a plasterer by trade) and his plasterer both felt that the...
