Urgent Help Required: Excessive Demolition & PP

Thank you for all your positive replies. However, having had an enforcement officer turn up to take photos today, the planner responded to our email with the conclusion that is their "professional opinion that a full planning application is required for the rebuild of the property. With this...

Urgent Help Required: Excessive Demolition & PP

Our PP: We have a semi-detached bungalow in a Greenbelt Settlement, but not in a Conservation Area. We were granted PP for a wrap around extension along the side and rear, as well as a new relocated porch at the front. The PP Decision Notice stated "Demolition of existing garage and...

How To Square New Building Walls

That all makes perfect sense and easy to follow. How about making sure that the first course of blocks is level all around? Is a water level or bricks/timber the easiest and accurate solution?

How To Square New Building Walls

We are about to start constructing the cavity walls of our 9mx9m outbuilding where only the front and one half of a side wall (which currently adjoins the front wall) is being retained. We quite crudely measured out our 700mm wide footings off these existing walls, but now need to make sure the...

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

I ordered the Plasmor blocks, thanks oldun :).

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

Or got the footings dug first ;)?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

Oldun, that's just the reply I was after, thank you so much! What do you mean by a 'better block'? I assume something other than a celcon/thermalite or concrete?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

And what type of mesh is most common? Is there a specific fixing as opposed to screws, washers and plugs?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

What sort of mesh should I be using? Chicken wire or the large plastering mesh (similar to scrim tape)? Should it then be adhered to the scratch coat?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

Shameless bump, I don't suppose anyone could respond to the above question please :)?

    How To Lay Trench Blocks?

Is there any downside to using trench blocks with 'handles'? And whether using the one's with 'handles' or flat faced, should they be butted up or have mortar in the perps?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

So all this speak of thin joint mortar isn't really applicable to residential extensions. Interesting. I assumed that although more expensive to purchase, time saved in laying blocks would make the entire process more cost effective, no? What's a good mortar mix for the joints between AAC...

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

Gotchya. 215 it is then. Am I likely to experience cracking issues after applying a sand/cement render onto 215 aerated blocks in the same way that a 100mm aerated block is problematic? Also, must I use a thin bed mortar with AAC blocks? Or can I use a sand/cement mortar?

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

That's great, thanks theoldun :). Any chance you (or anyone else) know what block type and insulation thickness would be required using 190mm blocks? And yes, the wall will be rendered.

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

To re-phrase, if I want to build a single block wall (i.e. not cavity) extension, what size block do I require and what thickness insulation+plasterboard should I be dotting+dabbing?
  20. E

    Cavity vs 140mm & Dot+Dab vs 190mm & Dot+Dab?

What is the minimum aerated block size and dot+dabbed insulation thickness required to meet current Building Regulations and be equivalent to a filled cavity wall construction for an extension? E.g. Would 140mm thermalite/celcon blocks with 50mm PIR be sufficient? Or would 190mm blocks be...
