Should a person going for a dinner party get food poisoning? Should the householder have tested the food to standards? Should the householder have to be qualifed chef to hold a dinner party? How many people die from food poisoning vs DIY electrics? Should we make everyone do a chef course...

Ther sticking point of such a scheme, while a good idea, is cost. The DIYer is probably not going to want to pay to run the scheme and I can't think that councils would want to foot the bill. While people who do DIYU electrical work regularly or do more advanced work would probably sign up...

But there is no need for it - it is their life and their property. I know a little about the standards required to run a commercial kitchen, and the requirements for testing/record keeping/training of chefs etc. Do you or anyone else run their home kitchen to the same standards. I'd say less...

    PAT testing domestic equipment

I remember once a spark came to my room at uni to test the electric heaters (dimplex fires). He just looked at at it and stuck a sticker on it. No PAT test. I asked him if he was going to do one. He said that he has a machine but wouldn't bother. What was the point? The handyman could...

    Loft Light

There are some things that a normal person can't do. But there are some things that they can, without all the gear. What I was saying is that people have different standards of work and there are circumstances when they are required. For example, you (not unreasonably) said you don't need...

It would be if the person had called in a doctor. he would have to do the full examination. just like you have to work to a much higher standard than a DIY. That's why people want a pro.

Why would a DIY install need all that testing. As long as it works, it's probably ok. It's when the problems start and a spark is called in that kind of gear is needed. Afterall, do you do everything to pro standard all the time? If someone has a headache, and they take a paracetamol...

"All new ring mains are now installed in 4mm not 2.5mm.

There was a guide at B&Q that said 4mm2 for 75m2 areas and 2.5mm2 for 50m2 areas. Could be form that.

Pull cord 40 Amp as cooker isolator ?

Common sense would (to me) say that it should be within reach of someone using the cooker.

    New socket from light switch

Surely it depends on what he wants the power for? If it is just for a TV amp then, if he a neutral at the switch he could fit a FCU or a round pin socket and it wouldn't be unsafe??

    Corgi registration

The question was 'How many other industries have this forced upon them'. I pointed out that there was one other (that I know of). Therefore it is relevant and may be of interest to namsag or other to know that they are not alone in having to pay such fees.

To be a doctor you have to pay the GMC over £300 a year (maybe more) or else you aren't allowed to work.

DeWalt drill bit set from B&Q - a good buy?

The set includes extreme masonary (6 off), extreme metal (6 off) and various crewdriver bits. It seems a decent buy - but what do the experts think?

    how dangerous??

I read that the landlord is happy to get the work done but the tennant doesn't want to pay for it. Why did you rent a property without seeing the safety certs? It seems odd you are complaining about the owner wanting to sort out a dangerous system!
