    burning question

I've always got sound advice from knowledgeable people on here so I wanted to ask people's opinion on my quandary... I'm just starting work on my lounge and I have a chimney - great but it currently contains a pretty ugly gas fire. Both myself and wife would like to replace it with an 'in-wall'...

    leaking crosswater bath tap

the mystery continues, was leaking last night but was fine this morning... I turned the tap on/off and no dripping for leaking... Really weird. Could this be crud that has cleared itself? Seems very strange

    leaking crosswater bath tap

strange one, or perhaps not??? After running the kids bath tonight I noticed the bath tap was dripping which quite quickly turned into a constant running (immediately not much). I isolated the tap, removed the cartridge, ran under water looked for damage (none) and replaced. I then turned the...

    rad removal

I've got a cast iron rad that is leaking so the suppliers are going to recondition it once removed. One end has a valve with a trickle filter so when I wind it in closed the pin doesn't close fully. Is there a trick or tool I can use to put on top of the pin so when I wind the TRV in is...

    built-in bookcase

ok, purchased MR MDF from Travis Perkins although surprised as was expecting it to look quite green, however if you look closely there is a green core to the board. Got them to cut it to plank sizes to save time although they've stored some badly as they have bowed! Might have to get them to...

    built-in bookcase

My sub cables come out in one corner and it's deeper than the shelving so that will sit on the floor hence it being open so it doesn't look too strange. Think i'm going to make the bookcase slightly narrower (2-3") then pack in between this and the wall as it wont be plumb then use a filler...

    built-in bookcase

how would you do either end? Would you do vertical uprights, building it away from the wall then install and finish using some sort of quadrant to take out any uneven gaps/spaces? Would you glue and screw each horizontal shelf into the verticals?

    built-in bookcase

I would like to build a built-in bookshelf like in the image below but I have a few questions... 1) What is the best material to use? 2) I was looking at timber at timber merchants but the widest plank seems to be around 20cm however I need it around 24cm as cookbooks are pretty deep is...

    Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom'

thinking of growing one of these up the front of my house/porch as it's a bit bland... I have a stone edged border about 18 inches wide and wondered if this was enough room and if it would damage the footings if it was planted right up against my house? Also I know i'm late in the year for this...

    beading showing

So two coats of tinted Zinsser and it was looking good, another coat of emulsion and I can still see faint marks... Reading more online it actually seems like the marks are more likely due to PVA residue rather than water marks. I've had tons of rooms skimmed over the years and never painted...

wonder if i'm just better biting on the bullet and doing the stain stop now as it will be much easier then in the future... Seems like there are a few Zinsser 1-2-3 stain stops out there! this one seems to be the standard and is available in grey and most places will carry it as a stock...

    beading showing

@dcdec Bugger, I should have been more patient! Is there a particular stain stop I should go for? Will it be ok to just apply it to the areas in question then two coats of emulsion over the top?

    beading showing

@footprints you know that was my first thought but I checked every few days to see if the darker areas were contracting however they seemed to stay the same size, in the end I left it just under 5 weeks before painting but maybe the pressure to get in got the better of me :(

    beading showing

Thought a couple of images might help explain the issues, sure you guys come across this on a daily basis: So here is a shot of the corner 4 weeks after being skimmed I applied a mist coat, then once dry applied my first coat of dulux matt emulsion and 12hrs later this is what it...
