Why is a gas cooker safe?

Is a cooker somehow catalytic then? It just strikes me that it would be more efficient to heat my lounge with a cooker that a gas fire due to the heat loss up the chimney

Why is a gas cooker safe?

Why does a gas fire (heater) in a lounge need a flue whereas a cooker in kitchen does not? Both burn gas and are used in a confined space. I would have though that either both produces Carbon Monixide or neither did.

    Opening windows jammed

Thanks for the advice, I have just given it a try. Unfortunately, no luck though. The spindle looks OK and turning with a screwdriver gives the same result too. It is certainly locked on one side only when 'open' and on both sides when closed. Any more ideas?

    Opening windows jammed

My bathroom window would not open this morning. The handle only turns through 45 degrees now rather that the normal 90degrees. It seems to me that the locking bolt in the bottom right corner is stuck as if i press both bottom corners the left moves a bit, the right not at all. I want to get...

    Hidden under the lawn?

The yellow area was partly part and partly cleared border. Before we bought the house, the elderly couple who lived here had the gardener clear the whole garden. I added about 10-15cm of topsoil when I leveled the garden. I guess the soil below that will be fairly compact and will have a...

    Hidden under the lawn?

Might be drainage... but it has not rained in Leeds for about 6 weeks now - until today :( I thought it might be to do with the soil quality though. The bit that was grass before looks green and lovely. The other bit was bare soil before, could the nutrients have been washed or eroded away? If...

    Low energy downlighter

LEDs might well be the way forward. Can they be controlled from a PIR? I have also considered a IP44 striplight, but have not found one of those yet.

    Hidden under the lawn?

I don't think it has been caused by walking as the back door to the house is in the lower right corner of the picture, not the lower left. The line of change between green grass and yellow grass follows the line of the previous lawn, is this likely to be a coincidence?

    Dead spiders in water butt

I now have an escape chain from the bottom of the butt, up the drain pipe and out to the roof above the gutter. There are also some floating islands (bits of wood). Since I installed these there have been no further fatalities in my water butt. Has it worked? I'll just have to wait and see....

    Low energy downlighter

Where can I find a low energy downlighter that will fit into a ceiling with 6cm clearance above? This will be used outside so some degree of water resistance is required Background: I am looking to install a downlighter (or 2) in the canopy above my front door. By canopy I mean a bit of roof...

    Dead spiders in water butt

Thanks for the ideas, i'll give them a go. I like the idea of string as that can go from the gutter, down the downpipe and right into the water butt. A good method of escape!!

    Dead spiders in water butt

I recently installed a water butt connected directly to the shed drain pipe, ie. the downpipe goes directly into the top of the water butt. I had a look yesterday to see how much water I had collected and was shocked to see 8 large spiders dead in the bottom. What can I do to prevent more dying...

    Tap foamer retrofit

Hi, I have always noticed that in much of mainland Europe and many hotels that the water comes out of the tap more like foam than water. I was told once that there is a small mesh filter that causes this effect. Recently I saw a device in an Eco catalogue that claimed to reduce water...

    4 core SWA - 2 circuits OK?

Hi, I have run about 10m of 4 core 4mm2 SWA from an existing shed to a new shed. I would like to use two cores for a socket, 2 cores for a light and the armour for the earth. I will connect the cable to the light and socket at one end, and to the CU in the shed at the other end, a 6A MCB and a...

    Bathroom fans and perceived noise

I have a brick cavity wall with plaster then tiles. I dont really want to core drill as I risk smashing tiles, etc. The soffit is wide enough and there is enough access, so inline it is. Thanks for the advice.

    Bathroom fans and perceived noise

I need to install a fan in my bathroom due to problems with condensation mainly over the winter months. My initial thought was to fit an axial fan in the external wall and vent directly outside. Now I am changing my mind. I would prefer not to have to core drill a 100mm hole through the...
