Stained external masonry - need the ultimate stain block

Thanks, I have looked at the Zinsser website and I see that Zinsser BIN is a shellac based stain blocker, do you think that this might be more effective? I did notice that the spec says it is suitable for spot external use - not sure what the implications are of that statement and if it...

Stained external masonry - need the ultimate stain block

Unfortunately I cannot recall for sure what product he used but I think it might have been Bullseye 123. Not tried any other types of paint yet, do I assume from your question that the Sandtex paint is water based masonry paint and the Weathershield would have better stain resisting properties?

Stained external masonry - need the ultimate stain block

I have had on going problems for ages with brown stains appearing on the external masonry around the bay window of our house (it is painted white - good quality masonry paint) Last year we were due to have the whole house painted so I decided to strip the stained paintwork down to the bare...

Leak from shower cubicle outlet pipe

Hi, Having spent a lot of time over the past week trying to trace a water leak from the shower cubicle in the bathroom which was dripping into the kitchen cupboard below. I have re sealed every available joint around the cubicle and shower base with silicone to no avail. I have now...

    Washing machine/Dishwasher drain

Hi, Just checked - it enters above the trap. Is this significant? because looking in the screwfix catalogue all of the sink traps that have a washing machine inlet seem to enter above the trap.

    Washing machine/Dishwasher drain

Hi, We have a dishwasher and washing machine next to each other in the kitchen. The dishwasher drain is via a 'standard' trap and stand pipe to the outside drain, the washing machine drains via a spigot attachment to the trap on the sink waste. Everything works ok except that we get...

Turning hot wtaer tap on causes RCD to trip?

First prize. Ended up going over there and noticed a noise like a motor running when the tap was turned on, thought at first it was water hammer but traced the source back to the airing cupboard. When I looked inside, buried under a pile of towels was a pump - it was mad hot. Took all the...

Trying to do some long distance diagnosis for an elderly relative (to determine if we need an electrician or a plumber) The syptoms are that when they turn on the bathroom hot water tap the RCD trips in the consumer unit (not every time). I can only assume that it is some connection with...

This is now becoming more noticeable, I have a tin of Zinsser Clear binding primer, would this be effective or should I stick to oil based undercoat? Thanks

    Admastik sealant for door threshold

Just bought a new Stormguard front door threshold, got it home and noticed that they (strongly) recommend using Admastik sealant to bed the threshold. Is this just a re-badged standard variety of product or is it really something special and do you know where I can get it (or equivalent)...

masonary paint - number of coats?

Thanks for the extra information, given that the sandstone now has about five coats of masonry paint on it is there anything that can be done to overcome this or will adding more coats eventually resolve the situation?

masonary paint - number of coats?

Thanks but I understood that stabiliser should only be used if the surface is flaking/powdery. In this case although back to bare stone the surface was fine

masonary paint - number of coats?

We have just had the outside of our house painted with Sandtex smooth white masonary paint. The render looks fine but the stonework around the windows is showing signs of discolouration (yellow). We had problems in the past with these areas of stone so the paint was stripped right back to the...

Massive thunderstorm and tripped circuit - connected?

Don't think it is connected, the kitchen had a flat roof over the extension which was replaced with a pitched roof about 18months ago, the area where the leak is in beneath the void under the pitched roof so I know there is no electrical wiring there.

Massive thunderstorm and tripped circuit - connected?

Thanks for that, Fortunately I tried resetting the circuit this morning and found that it didn't trip out again so I guess that water ingress was the problem. Strangely though the only outside socket we have is on a completely different circuit that powers the kitchen, the circuit that...
