GU10 240Vac LED Light Bulb Base

Only certain types of LED's are dimmable. You'll require the correct LED, driver and dimmer which isn't going to be cheap.

    Heat resistant flex with downlighters?

I always find it easier to make your mains cables off in to a junction box with a bit of flex (always heat resistant in my case but that's all i keep on the van) in to the terminal block on the fitting. It just makes life simpler as the connectors on the fittings are never really big enough for...

    Maintenance free vs accessible

Choc box and through crimps. Cheaper, smaller, a much better job and compliant with the regulations. Why anyone would buy one of those things especially at the price they are sold at will always baffle me.

    10a 4 pole 30ma rcd

Sure your not talking about a 4 pole 10A 30mA RCBO? Dopke do them if that's what your after plus they do 4 pole RCDs as well.

Downlights with a combined power greater than 1200 Watts

Aurora do a 12V CFL, decent 12V LED's will retro and don't forget IRC halogen. No need to go GU10 just to save electricity these days. Seriously though please apply diversity. Do you really expect to have every single light on in your house at the same time?! Yes, 6A at 230V is 1380W but i...

This is why we have rules and regulations

Put it this way, a Wylex board like that is not designed to take any load over 30A, the terminals get too hot and they melt. That's why Wylex put the little bit of extra plastic on the rear of the 40, 45 and 50A fuse carriers to stop them being fitted in those units. I've come across 40A fuses...

This is why we have rules and regulations

Correct me if i'm wrong but a bit of 2.5mm is gonna get a bit chuffing warm with 30A running down it on a regular basis. Soon as the connection gets to that sort of temperature (loose or not) it's gonna go high resistance and get even hotter. That terminal could have been done up as tight as you...

Legality of Downlights btw Floors in victorian flat

I really don't think this is the case. If the light is mounted directly to a flammable surface then it is dangerous. The reason i doubt this is on the basis of manufacturers would not make these lights if they couldn't be fitted in a ceiling void. Reading most recessed light manufacturers...

    Local isolation.

Went to first fix a shower today, never come across one like it. The shower unit (10.5kW) is installed in the roof space so you only have an outlet in the bathroom and a small battery powered remote control (used to start/stop and alter temperature) screwed to the wall in the shower cubicle...

    House Survey Recommendations

I wouldn't recommend a rewire at any stage unless it was obvious it was required. Your putting you Professional Indemnity Insurance at risk (if you have it) as if someone else was to come along and argue it didn't need a rewire you could be libel for the loss to the seller after the price was...

Legality of Downlights btw Floors in victorian flat

Doesn't this only relate to the surface the lamp is projecting on to? I'm gonna learn something new if it isn't. As for the lights in the ceiling i think it is correct that between dwellings a 60min fire barrier does have to be maintained. The floor must remain structurally stable for 60mins...

    Guess what I did today

Looks like lath and plaster, did you use a hammer and bolster to chop it out? Bet it won't be the last time it happens. I managed to nearly force a whole brick out of a wall whilst drilling a hole for some mini trunking. The brick was so loose i drilled in 50mm and the brick stuck out the other...

    Outside Electrics

There's nothing wrong with having the transformer in a suitably IP rated box outside. It'll have to be a good sized box to allow enough air to keep the transformers cool though. The main issue Zambezi is referring to is that the garden is classed as being a 'special zone' and therefore Part P...

    Thought i was clever :(

Crack your living room light switch open and get us a picture of what's in there. By the looks of it something was wired 2 way. That 4th switch obviously did something at some point. Are you certain that it didn't do anything at all. It's very borderline whether or not the work is notifiable...

    External Power Sockets

So long as the SWA is fused down correctly using a fused connection unit for example then there is no problem spurring off the ringmain. The MK Masterseal RCD sockets are usually only 1 gang so it's not like you can pull more then 13A anyway. Last time i checked you were allowed to spur one...

6A type C breaker should hold without a problem. Do you know how to connect the contactor up so that the photocell is operating the coil?

Assessing Fire Damage for Insurance Company

I've unfortunately had the honour of working on a number of fire damage properties. As Coljack has stated the cables in the walls where the fire was have most likely melted however it is suprising just how much of the installation will have been effected. I wouldn't be against recommending a...

    Outdoor pir wont switch off

Check the time isn't set to maximum. The PIR will operate when powered up initially as it tests itself. If the time is set to maximum when it is first turned on it will stay on for hours before it times out.

can I fitter a dimmer switch in these circumstances

Some companies will do a 400VA 2 gang dimmer. I think Scolmore do it in their Click range. If you fit a dimmer make sure your GU10 lamps are a good quality fused variety. Most name brands make fused lamps (Osram, Sylvania, Phillips etc) and will ensure that when they blow they won't damage your...
