    slugs are eating my hostas

The best thing if you don't want to use pellets are those green collars like bottomless mixing bowls. Not very pretty but great at the beginning of the season when all those juicy shoots get eaten overnight. If desperate, you can put a couple of slug pellets inside and the wildlife can't get...

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

Dave I've got the original paperwork - it's a Honeywell V4043 - not sure whether it is B, C or H. But I've just looked at the Honeywell website and I can get a replacement head. Thanks. Dan Thanks too.

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

You really are helping! I'm paranoid about electrical safety by the way!

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

Dave - Do you mean I could just change the whole head of the zone valve? No offence taken by the way! Jonquil

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

Point taken about the paragraphs. I realise you need as much info as possible without me rambling. Dan - I'm pleased to have an explanation about how it happened in the first place. He did take out the burners when changing the thermocouple, which surprised me a bit. I'll get him (or...

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

I've turned off the HW and then the power, but there is still no resistance in the valve so it seems it isn't working. Can I check one last thing? Is it possibly the wiring, or wouldn't the plumber have touched that when replacing the synchro motor? I'm really grateful for the advice! I'm...

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

Thanks Dave I've just come home and tried what you suggested. When I turn up the cylinder stat I can't hear anything happening in the zone valve. The valve set at auto but when I move the switch to manual I can't hear anything at all and there is no resistance (and I know I used to be able to...

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

The cylinder is heating up fine with the valve jammed open so I assume the stat is OK - it's set at about 65C. Hope when the motor is replaced all will be back to normal!! It's made me realise how we take hot water for granted.

Potterton boiler - CH but no HW

To gas4you Thanks for the reply. I sort of thought that but didn't like to say!! He has just been again and fitted the new programmer front but it hasn't solved the problem. He has gone away to get a part and will now look at replacing the motor on the valve. I'm relatively happy now...

Using pasterboard tape over painted ceiling

Any info gratefully received! I have a ceiling that an electrician said was the oldest plasterboard he had seen (house is 1950s). It is very hard and perhaps that is why it seems impossible to hide the joins. Even the ceilings I have had re-skimmed have cracked again - the house must be going...

    Hole in Internal Plasterboard Wall.

Thank you Skybluescooby for the reply and sorry not to have thanked you before. I have now done the job and it looks great. It's brilliant for a complete amateur to have access to so much useful information!!

What's the latest on foil loft insulation?

Hi all I have a boarded attic with loads of stuff that I don't really want to move and inset lights that are rather hot so I have moved away the insulation from above them. I want to do some additional loft insulation - it's a bungalow by the way. I spoke to a friendly building inspector who...

    Hole in Internal Plasterboard Wall.

Is it OK to muscle in on this discussion? I have a 3" roughly circular hole in a ceiling - daughter's head! Can I do the same thing from above - that is have a bit larger piece of plasterboard and glue it against the hole? I presume I can then build up layers of plaster from below. I suppose...
