What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

A skim of plaster? I've been advised not to use PVA at all by the tiling forum as it reacts with any moisture it may encounter when the tiles and grout get's wet. I've also been advised that render is a more sound surface and holds more weight than a skim? Anyone anything to add???

What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

Going to do the rendering, I've bought some building sand, cement and some Everbuild Evermix 3 in 1 waterproofer/admix. My only doubt now is going on to the brick wall, I have chipped off the plaster and I'm going to wash the wall down. Would you recommend I PVA the wall or not - obviously I'm...

What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

Gone for a aqualisa digi shower with controls sited outside of the cubicle and showerhead is above the area I'm tiling so hopefully no water ingress from there. Also using bal rapidset flexible on advice of this forum. With regard to the render if there's no chance of feathering it out at...

What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

Thanks for your advice. Even after stripping away the plaster I do not have enough space to use a plasterboard on the bare brick as I have a 20mm discrepancy at the bottom near the tray, then the wall is leaning inwards and at 2m high it is to nothi g, so essentially I need to apply a wedge of...

What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

Brilliant advice, thankyou. My only concern is the adhesion between render and brick. My plasterer friend suggested attaching a sheet of metal mesh to the wall with fixings and rendering through that to ensure it doesn't comeaway from the wall, I suppose it might also help with getting a level...

Height of splashback behind bathroom basins

I'm tiling my washbasin top with 40cm x 40cm natural slate. The width of the tabletop is 40cm, and I have built a 20cm high pelmet which I'm also tiling. My sinks are about 18cm high and the taps about 26cm high. I was thinkng about tiling the splashback about 20cm high so it is the same as the...

What type of render for tiling onto in a shower situation?

Im building a shower cubicle in a u shape. The right hand wall is down to red brick and is 20mm out of plumb. I am going to be tiling the shower using a slate weighing 32kg pm2. I do not have space to dot and dab aquapanel or moistureboard so I figure rendering the wall is my only option. My...

Urgent advice needed please re tiling onto render/plaster

I have built a u shaped shower enclosure. The back wall and the right hand wall are moisture board onto wood. The right hand wall is the house wall and made from brick with a plaster. The problem is that the brick wall is not plumb, and over a height of 2m it impedes the floor space by 20mm. I...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Cool, I'm not doing the floor though, only the walls! And have a dunlop sealing kit to apply first. So when you apply adhesive with the comb, should the longer threads of the comb be touching the slate, therefore you are basically applying 5mm stripes of adhesive to each surface, if you see what...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

One last question, or three! When laying the 400mm x 400mm x 10mm slate tiles, to what thickness do I comb the adhesive? To cover 9sq m, how many 20K bags of BAL rapidset will I need? To what consistency do I mix the adhesive? Thanks

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Great advice thanks, the final question - how much should I pay for a decent blade and can you recommend any here? http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Abrasives/Diamond+Blades/d130/sd1450 And from this page Im thinking of getting: Sponge Adhesive Comb Grout Spreader Tile File Spacers...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Great!! I assue the 3-4mm from tile to tray is just to allow for a good flexible seal? - rather than a small 1mm gap? The tiles will also be overlapping the tray by a good 5mm, so that will provide a good overhang. Also what's the best method to smooth silicone, I do have a tool somewhere and...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Right nearly there, sorry for all the questions, just going over it in my mind!! When using the silicone do I use: a) grout corners of tiles using dark grey grout (on a dark grey tile), then run a bead of silicone over the top? b) Is it best to use clear silicone, and what brand? c)...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

cheers for that, it makes sense! I assume that I will be ok just butting up the corners of the tiles in the two corners then grouting to fill the gap? When it comes to the seal between shower tray and tile, I assume a bead of silicone is sufficient, or do you recommend using a tile trim? I have...

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Yes I think I understand. Is it then better to lay the first row, from the centre outwards and continue onto the two other walls, or is it better to tile the facing wall first, then tile the two other walls after the facing wall is complete?

Please recommend me a primer, adhesive and grout for slate

Thanks again for your advice. So for the final finish of the grout - is it just smoothed over after using the squeegee or do you finish it with a special tool so it is indented? Also - fi you could anser me this, I am tiling a shower cubicle in a brick staggered fashion using 400mm x 400mm...
