Strange Joist on top of (non-load-bearing) kitchen/dining room wall

Ran out of batteries on the multi-tool (cheap aldi junk). Will try again tomorrow.

Strange Joist on top of (non-load-bearing) kitchen/dining room wall

Some ventilation gaps between the two cupboards reveal they are made of concrete blocks. As is the airing cupboard The vertical blue walls are approx. 460mm away from the red line which marks the "strange joist" and the wall underneath. The two horizontal green walls depict the sides of the...

Strange Joist on top of (non-load-bearing) kitchen/dining room wall

Looks like the joists are approx. 340mm apart (measured from the center of each). The floorboards have indeed been nailed to the piece of timber sat on top of this "strange joist". There are no cross members I can see. In fact, it looks like this "strange joist" isn't a joist at all, as it...

Strange Joist on top of (non-load-bearing) kitchen/dining room wall

Not sure how clear these pictures are now I look at them online. I can try and get some better ones if it's not clear!

Strange Joist on top of (non-load-bearing) kitchen/dining room wall

Looking to DIY remove the wall between our kitchen and dining room, and from what I've read and can see it's not load-bearing. Just looking for a second (third, fourth,...) opinion as I'm a little confused by the fact that the joist on top of it is different (smaller) to the other joists. Quick...

    My 1st House Extension

Been following you for a while. Very nice progress and encouraging to watch, with similar projects on the horizon and no budget to pay someone.

Is My Plasterer telling me porkies?!

I would've removed the bad bit myself, for exactly this reason.

    Workshop Build

You have way more patience than me. I would've been back to the hire place after 5 min. for a replacement and a discount.

    Extend a metal hole

Definitely fill and re drill the wall! Much easier.

Shed next to house - whats the smallest gap without problems?

Definitely go for a lean to. Chase in lead above the roof structure and you won't have any damp issues if you angle the roof away from the house.

    painting on plaster

I've been there a couple of times. In all honesty, it really depends on how much glue is still on the wall. If there's lot of residual glue left, then get that off first with a wet sponge. If there's a sheen to the wall, then some light sanding might be necessary. I would give it a wash with...

Advice on position of front door

Function over form for me, but that's a personal choice. I'd go for the front door on the left hand side. Or... you don't change anything. Neither of the "front doors" are currently visible from the front. So it's not clear where they are. You can use the "center" front door to accept...

    Moving an RSJ 660kg

If you can lift it on to the posts using a cantilever of sorts, then you should be OK. Just make sure you are careful of your hand and feet. Having it on the posts, you can't really drop it on anything else.

PD: "materials are of a similar appearance to those used in the construction of the house"

Can anyone clarify what this means? I'm thinking of adding a DIY extension to the back of the house, but I'm not confident in my bricklaying skills (not to mention it sounds like hard work). I am however confident I can DIY construct it out of SIP's or a wooden frame and clad it externally. The...

    Garden shed and other projects

Nice job! Did you ever do any rendering yourself before? Are you using Erbauer battery tools? Are they any good? Been pondering on buying a set and want to go for the Makita ones, but not sure if I can justify the cost as I would only use them for a bit of DIY.

Does this plan say whether the wall is load bearing?

Might take out the walls between those two bedrooms too. But I guess that means I'm moving the problem. Time to have a look in the loft.

Does this plan say whether the wall is load bearing?

It isn't. I'm just not 100% clear on the answer. Some say that if the joists run parallel to the wall, that I can remove the wall. Others say the opposite. Who wouldn't get confused! I would like to take out the wall between kitchen & dining room. The two walls (built in cupboards, with the...
