    Digging up 1970s kitchen floor.

Thanks for your reply. Based on that I decided to drill out a hole. Yes the walls are on bricks so not involved with the 'slab'. I've got about 3 inches of a very sandy sand/cement and below that I've got about 4 inches of cement thats got a lot of large stones/flint etc in in. No...

    Digging up 1970s kitchen floor.

Hi all, I am seeking some experience and wisdom please :) Our house is a 1970s semi detached that is of cross wall construction (timber frame and massive windows the the front, bricks and big windows to the rear). The house has a ground floor extension to the rear. The current kitchen...

    Earthing of outdoor lighting

Are the lights class 2 (double insulated)? They may say class 2 or there may be a symbol which is a square inside a square? are you running SWA between each junction box? what sort of junction boxes are you using? are you using 2 core SWA?

    Neutral Bounce ? ? ( discussion only )

There was nothing visibly wrong with the conductor, if I go back to that job I will have a look at the CSA to see if there's any change. I have been to TNC-S faults before where the overhead neutral has broken and somehow made contact with the live conductor. The only way to earth is through...

    Neutral Bounce ? ? ( discussion only )

There was no installation damage that I could find. There was however TVs/Sky boxes - infact most things plugged into the aerial system in both properties had failed. Their central heating programmer had also failed and upon opening it a resistor looked to have over heated. I normally...

    Neutral Bounce ? ? ( discussion only )

I got called to a job a couple of weeks ago that was affected by a lightning strike. Both sides of a semi detached were affected. They have a loop supply. We believe that the aerial was hit. In both properties the RCD main switch had burnt/melted. Both properties were fed overhead and should...

Fitted dimmer and now light doesnt work

The dimmer module probably has a minimum load requirement, so that's my guess why the LEDS wouldn't dim. Have you wired in the original dimmer back in correctly?

    New tncs supply, 16mm ok?

You're probably right about the discrimination but thats the practice we use. A second cutout is probably used as you say for isolation for mainly metering. We never use Henley blocks supply side, even though they can be sealed. SSE use a red Henley 7 carrier which is just a straight link...

    New tncs supply, 16mm ok?

Depends on the property type/demand. It used to be 16mm split concentric for small properties, gas heating, 25mm for anything bigger and if there were night storage heaters. Now there is a rule of thumb that 25mm is used, though occasionally engineers request 16mm, normally if it makes...

    New tncs supply, 16mm ok?

In my experience with UKPN I think they will want you to convert to a submain. I don't believe they will like a switch fuse before the meter as it's a point that can be tampered with. Unless they can seal it. I think they are expecting the meter to be moved to the cupboard so the cutout can...

    New tncs supply, 16mm ok?

So you are saying the meter/s are not in the intake cupboard? What property type? Flats - http://library.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/library/en/g81/Design_and_Planning/Planning_and_Design/Documents/EDS+08+-+0118+Supplies+to+Multi-occupied+buildings.pdf

Fixing twin and earth when you're no good at using a hammer?

The cable is to remain exposed. I have been tinkering around with it and it fits perfectly with a 5mm plug and a 3.0 x 30 screw. So a little long winded but at least I can get some neat clips in. It's not a long run, maybe 2-3m. Thanks all.

Fixing twin and earth when you're no good at using a hammer?

Has anyone for any solution for clipping direct twin and earth to masonary when the surface is too hard to get a nail in cleanly? Now it's probably half to do with my striking of the hammer. I try and go in the mortar but still can't get it neat. I've read something about using clip plugs...

    Conservatory floor damp?

Thanks for your reply. The tiles that have lifted are along the line of bricks that are showing. My bet is that there's no DPM on it. The DPM on exterior wall is <150mm, this is due to the lady living here before us having the patio raised higher, looking at our neighbours house it would...

    Conservatory floor damp?

Hi, We noticed that a couple of tiles on our conservatory floor had started to lift and the grout too. I take the tiles up and a generation of ants are making themselves comfortable underneath. The ants are gone (almost). I can't work out if the tiles raised because of damp and then the...

Hi, We moved into out property a few months ago. We removed a saniflo that entered the soil pipe via a boss. The diameter of the boss is approx 60mm. We would like to now permanently cap this but are unable to find a cap that is of this diameter. Can anyone please point us in the right...

    Asbestos flue?

I've just had the asbestos contractor round. He said it's definitely not asbestos. They've just plastered round the semi circle slabs that have been manufactured the same as breeze blocks. The string too isnt asbestos. Thanks all for your advice. Chris.
