    No earth connection

Assuming there's nowhere neat to terminate the Earth cable (presumably there isn't a ceiling rose for example) then I would get a piece of choc-block and put it in there, wrap it in green&yellow insulating tape, and tuck it neatly out of the way. Do NOT cut it back - in future someone else may...

Ceiling fan/light wiring - extra yellow wire ?

I was going to ask how you did that, but I can see now! :) Cheers, Howard

Ceiling fan/light wiring - extra yellow wire ?

Then there are people like my late mother, who would use: Pliers, mole-grips, the back of an axe... basically anything metal and heavy, as a hammer Chisels, scissors, paint scrapers, kitchen knives... basically anything metal with a narrow edge, as a screwdriver Her father was a brilliant...

Can you tell us what they did? Cheers, Howard

    earthing

Ah, so no crimped-on rings then! Would you just run it through one side, or untwist and split it either side of the screw? Cheers, Howard

My House Rewire (Current progress and some questions!)

The hole-placement is nothing to do with electricity - it's the reduction in strength of the joists that's as stake. If there are holes there already, even if they're in the wrong place, I can assure you that drilling new ones won't make the joists stronger! If there are holes you can...

    earthing

As an aside, is it acceptable to run the main bonding cable from the MET to the gas pipe then on to the water pipe, or do they have to be individual runs? Cheers, Howard

moving a double 13a socket (up) by about 30cm

Just a thought: if it's all hidden in a cupboard, why not just add the new socket, leaving the existing one in place? New socket would be wired "before" the existing one, so the "too short" outgoing cable stays where it is, the new socket has the feed cable and a short link cable to the...

    BT lines

I have no idea what it's supposed to do, but on my (pure BT) line it says "Sorry, the service requested is not available" ! I'd be interested to hear what it should do, too... Cheers, Howard[/b]

    LED lights

It's all very well pulling the cord to dim the lights... but how do you push it to brighten them? Cheers, Howard

    end of T&E?

I predict that the Government will discover that in almost all cases of electrocution, the fatal electrical current was carried to the victim by copper-cored T&E, and in an attempt to make us safer in our homes will ban any electrical system in domestic premeses which includes conductors...

    Fishing techniques?

How are the various brass "ends" of a fish-tape or access rod set used? They seem to come in various flavours, and I can't see how most of them would be used, especially the one with the small rectangular hole in it. Any hints and tips, chaps? Cheers, Howard

    Wylex Type B & Type C breakers

Errr - No! NSB are the current type - have a look at (say) Screwfix or TLC and you'll see that they're the ones they're selling for the "NH" range of CUs. However, I've had problems getting several NSB types to coexist - despite the same name, they come in various varieties, which may be...

    immersion heaters?

There's a risk of scalding someone if they put their hand under the hot tap! The other reason for 60C is that it's much less likely to fur up if you're in a hard water area - the reccomendation is usually 60C in hard water areas, 65C if it's soft. Cheers, Howard

What's the maximum number of downlights/bulbs

My advice is simple: Don't do it! :) I think it's well overboard... have you thought about what this lot will cost to run? If they are all on an average of five hours a day, that's about a hundred quid a quarter electricity bill, just for the lights! Not to mention Global Warming...

    electric shower

Are you sure it's not just furred-up, so operating below its capabilities? Not easy to tell, of course, but if you're in a hard water area it's a definite possibility. Around here (Hertfordshire) the water's hard enough to stand a mouse on! Cheers, Howard

    New light(s) installation problems

Just a thought - I see the Hall light switch is wired for one-way operation - is it possible that previously there was 2-way switching, with another switch on the Landing, say? If so, and it's been removed, that may go some way to explaining why there are so many wires, and why the strange...

    Generator changeover switch

Hmm... £999.95... I wonder if he'd do it for £999.00 for cash? :D I love the assertion: "HAVING A GENERATOR CHANGE OVER SWITCH MEANS YOU'LL NEVER HAVE THESE PROBLEMS AGAIN. YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE ELECTRICITY." - there is the minor point that you need a generator too... Given that a generator...

    no earth to ceiling rose

Only if you strip the insulation off the outside first, and wrap it in insulating tape instead... :D Cheers, Howard
