Land Drain & FoulDrain - Same Trench

Another quick question on this. I read that for 110mm pipe you should use 10mm pea gravel but is there anything stopping me use 20mm?

Land Drain & FoulDrain - Same Trench

    Earth Rod - DIY

Yes, latest plan, under the living room floor and out of the wall through an airbrick, Th reason for going through the airbrick is the whole of the front of the house is sat on a sandstone plinth and the wall is about 18 inches thick. There are 2 airbricks for the living room subfloor and each...

    Earth Rod - DIY

I could but this would be a lot of disruption and I also dont want the wire to run down the outside wall. I would have to take the floor up on a landing and possibly 2 bedrooms and then come down a wall inside before getting to the outside. I will however have a further ponder today.

    Earth Rod - DIY

I cant easily get to an outside location as the CU etc is in the middle of the house, hence one of my first questions was could I have the rods inside. Under the living room floor is the most convenient location otherwise it is either break a concrete floor up or go through 2 rooms and an...

    Earth Rod - DIY

There appears to have never been an earth. We are on an overhead supply and just a live and neutral come into the house. There are earth cables running from the CU's to the fuse and I seem to remember he took the cover off this to see if there was a bridge to the neutral (or something like that...

    Earth Rod - DIY

Hi B-A-S, They have verbally said, after checking with the office, that they are not responsible for providing the earth. D

    Earth Rod - DIY

For clarity the spark has agreed to come and test it and I am merely sticking it in the ground. I know there are no services where I will be locating it so that isn't an issue. My question was if I put 2 in is it better to have them separate or joined?

    Earth Rod - DIY

Good question, it took the man from the electric board to check. I think he said it looked like it was meant to be earthed to the neutral with a connector in the switch but he checked this and it wasn't. I didn't fully understand what he was on about though. I am fitting the earth rods on...

    Earth Rod - DIY

Sorry for such a very late reply - it is a twin motor compressor, the biggest one Clarke do on a normal domestic supply. I got the spark in to fit the supply and he recommended a new CU and a dedicated circuit on the basis that I will be getting a house rewire anyway.

Land Drain & FoulDrain - Same Trench

Hi all, Is there any reason why I shouldn't put both a surface water/land drain pipe and a foul drain pipe in the same trench?? They are going to different outlets but in the same general area and from the same building. Thanks D

    Foul drain - minimum fall

If I am reading this correctly my peak flow would be on average around 2.5 litres per second (according to table 5). In reality it might be a bit more as it is a fairly large house and there are 4 of us but even if I look at the next estimate up it is only 3.5 litres per second. Then looking at...

    Foul drain - minimum fall

Hi all, I have been reading about recommended falls for foul drains and as far as I can tell they are anywhere between 1 in 40 and 1 in 80. According to Wyre Council they can be anywhere between 1 in 40 and 1 in 110. For my scheme I think I can manage around 1 in 60. Would this be adequate...

    Old fashioned septic tank

Hi Hugh, I have covered it again with the original panels but I am not happy with the state they are in as they are cracked in multiple places. I will be replacing the cover most likely with a series of manholes. It will be a while though before doing so. I wasn't aware specifically of the...

    Old fashioned septic tank

So a bit of an update after further exploration today. The tank has been covered in ivy and so today I uncovered it all so I could get a better look. The top is covered in 1 foot wide concrete slabs and a few of them were broken. I removed them all today and exposed the whole tank so it is much...

    Old fashioned septic tank

Thanks @wgt52, that would explain it as I cant see any outlet either level with or above the water level. @Ian H - downhill from the tank is a hollow in the ground where a separate land drain outfalls. I am assuming that the septic tank also drains out into this hollow. The ground here is...

    Old fashioned septic tank

Thanks Hugh. Tank is fine and has been for the 4 years we have been here; we get it emptied once a year. It isn't porous (it is 1 foot thick concrete) so I am assuming there must be an outflow. I need to find the outflow as I am planning to dump a load of stone into the soakaway and I dont want...

    Old fashioned septic tank

I have an old style septic tank in my garden that looks like it is made out of cast concrete. I understand the basics of how the tank works but I cant find the outlet I was expecting. I can see into the smaller chamber of the tank (which appears to contain mostly water) and I can see what...

    Earth Rod - DIY

Thanks chaps. It is the testing patrt I am concerned about as I don't have the necessary skills to do this. I can however do all of the manual parts of the job. The issue with having no earth was discovered when a bloke came to fit a smart meter. He told me that there were 262 volts on the...
