    Timber embedded in wall

Many thanks but I'm not sure how you found this thread as it's well old!

What's the magic formula for stud walls?

Hi there, I know probably loads of questions have been asked about stud partition walls, but...... So far I have found that the advice seems to be to use 100mmx50mm timber and to fix the verticals at 600mm centres between sole and head plate timbers. Then use 100mm insulation to fill the gaps...

    Taking the outer leaf down......

Where did you hire it from Masona? Any idea what it was called or who it was made by? The builder is saying that one of the most likely ways for the bricks to get chipped and damaged is when they are thrown down and with all the handling, so this might well help. Many thanks.

    Taking the outer leaf down......

Yeah we have the scaffold ordered, but is there a way of getting the bricks down more easily without chipping them and without carrying them down a couple at a time? I'm thinking hoists, chutes etc, etc. I'm just looking for ways to do the job quicker and more safely (without hand-balling them)...

    Taking the outer leaf down......

For many reasons we are going to be taking the outer leaf of a gable wall down and re-using the bricks elsewhere. I'm looking for any advice to make this job easier and quicker, so any labour/time saving devices or techniques would be much appreciated. Guess that about says it, many thanks.

    Brick Matching.......

Many thanks to you all. I hadn't intended to use the forum to actually try to match my bricks, was more looking for advice on who best to go to, whether that should be brick specialists or builders merchants and what exactly to look for if anything. I'll definitely try out Huws Gray in...

    Brick Matching.......

Just about to start an extension, or rather a builder is about to start an extension at my house in a few weeks time. We are trying to obtain the best brick match we can, which isn't proving that easy, I just wondered whether any of you have any tips on how best to go about it, or can recommend...

    Building over-hand........can you?

Thanks Colin_p so I can see from what you are saying that the brickwork working overhand is likely to be poorly finished. Many thanks.

Foam gun use, some guidance please....

Thanks Jack, I was hoping they were easier to use than the DIY cans which are sometimes difficult to reuse. So, if I finish for the night but have more to do the next day, do I leave the can connected and just plug up the plastic tube (closing the screw valve at the back when not in use as you...

Foam gun use, some guidance please....

Thanks noseall. Am I right in thinking then that if you stop working for long the stuff will dry in the gun and completely knacker it?

Foam gun use, some guidance please....

Hi there, I'm about to use one of these any tips? I've used foam filler before loads but never the pro stuff from a gun like this. If I do a bit (I'm going to use it to flll in around a door lining or 2), can I stop and then start again? Any tips gratefully received.

    Building over-hand........can you?

Hi there. I've had some plans agreed which will require what I've learnt is called bricklaying over-hand. There will be no access granted from next door. The thing is the architect said "oh that won't be a problem, they'll just build it overhand" but now a builder has said they can't due to...

    Replacing internal door frame/lining

You mean you'd do the studwork for the top panel first? What's the advantage to using these plugs over just filling the holes with filler and sanding?

    Replacing internal door frame/lining

Thank you Scrit, this is very helpful and confirms pretty much what I had thought. The frames I have removed were full height - they went from floor to ceiling and into the loft where they were nailed to the ceiling joists. Obviously I can see how this gives the frame more strength, but will it...

    Replacing internal door frame/lining

Due to structural movement in the house, it's been necessary to remove a couple of door frames which were twisted and knackered and replace them. The linings were floor to ceiling with the top panel plastered. So far I have cut the frame away to just below the plastered section and was hoping to...

    Hot it's not

Ah OK I was forgetting that the boiler has another temperature control . It had been turned down low (by previous occupants) so it should be at 3/4? The instructions only ever say turn the knob to the "desired temperature" and gives no other guidance. I'll turn it up and see if that fixes...

    Hot it's not

My central heating/hot water system consists of a Gloworm Micron non pressurised gas boiler, standard hot water tank with feeder tank in the loft. The hot water isn't getting hot enough and we have to rely on the immersion which is costing me a fortune. I think also when the heating is on (not...

    Yet another insulation query...........

Hi there noseall, the space blanket is quilted insulation but bagged up and with a foil side which goes face up. Just doesn't quite fill the 41-43cm gap I have. What widths does insulation normally come in?
