    Hightest BTU radiators

We need to replace an old 700mm x 700mm radiator with a more efficient one. Trying to avoid replacing pipework so are restricted to 700mm wide. However the maximum height for standard radiators seems to also be 700mm. The BTUs quoted are too low for the size of our room. I imagine the double...

    Painting vinyl wallpaper

The paper doesn't peel, it seems to be more of a low sheen wipeable standard wallpaper. It's not an option to do this as it's the landing and stairwell which I wouldn't attempt myself. I did look for Zinsser, B&Q had a different version for £40 but several days later my test painting seems...

    Painting vinyl wallpaper

Hi I wish to matt paint over intact, low sheen, plain, vinyl wallpaper. What is the best way of preparing the paper to enable the paint to adhere? (I'm sure this is not Ideal but I can't cope with stripping the paper and relining it!) Thanks for any help.

    Laminate floor recommendations

We had Quickstep Elite flooring laid a year ago and I would definitely not recommend it. It scratches very easily from everyday use and is definitely not quality, durable flooring. Ours has only been subjected to light everyday wear and tear. The surface layer is very thin and the colour does...

Shower Enclosure - cleaning Clearshield glass

I did look into installing a water softener. There wasn't room in our under-sink cupboard due to the disposal; it would have had to go outside in a box - eyesore! Then they realised we had two mains inlets so would have had to have a second machine in the garage to soften the washing machine...

Shower Enclosure - cleaning Clearshield glass

Hi The Shower Guard you mention sounds like another brand of glass protection similar to the Clearshield factory-applied coating on our enclosure glass. I'm unsure what cleaner to use for everyday cleaning. What is determined to be a mild cleaner? The limescale will still build up on...

Shower Enclosure - cleaning Clearshield glass

Hi We've installed a new shower enclosure with Clearshield glass protection. It is advised to only use soapy water to clean it. Even with the protection the glass already has mild water marks and soap definitely doesn't remove limescale from the frame. The manufacturer only recomends Ritec...

    Musty smell/mould in vanity cupboard

It's not moist or humid in any way and never needed an extractor. When the room was refurbished there was a leak into the new cupboard which caused the mould. After it was fixed, cleaned and dried out I failed to notice the black mould covering the underside of the sink. Now that has been...

    Musty smell/mould in vanity cupboard

No, there's not. There never has been and it has a good size window and radiator. A fan really wouldn't help as the cupboard is completely sealed. I've tried wiping all the mould off the bottom of the sink with mould remover and will leave the door open for a few days then see if the...

    Musty smell/mould in vanity cupboard

Thanks, but it's just a small downstairs loo. It doesn't have any condensation problems and is well heated, it's just the inside of the cupboard that's unventilated.

    Musty smell/mould in vanity cupboard

Hi We've recently had a small basin vanity cupboard unit fitted in our new cloakroom. It's developing black mould under the basin and the cupboard smells very musty. There're no leaks. The cupboard has no ventilation which is presumably the problem. Do you think cutting a hole in the base of...

    1930 style prefinished doors

Thanks again. I expect we'll get a tradesman to do the work and ask whether a refurb or replacement is the best option. I don't fancy that amount of sanding on the landing as the whole house will be covered.

    1930 style prefinished doors

Thanks for your detailed reply! This all makes sense I guess. Unfortunately our existing doors are not original. They are just old and painted with layers of white, peeling paint! At this rate I might just get them stripped and repainted as I'm lost for ideas on what to replace them with...

    1930 style prefinished doors

Not sure why you would think that. Do you mean prefinished doors (I imagine the majority of people would rather have factory finished coatings), or the fact that they are 1930s when so many properties are from this era and Victorian or "modern" DIY chain store doors are inappropriate.

    1930 style prefinished doors

I'm trying to find suitable doors in 1930s style. I want prefinished doors in either white or oak finish. Does anyone know where I can find these at a reasonable price as I can only find raw oak or pine? I just don't want the work of finishing them, especially as it's for all 7 doors off our...

    Concealing Pipework

Hi We have pipework running through our kitchen worktop which needs concealing. Have considered pvc trunking but is it correct it will turn yellow and the paint will crack from the heat of the pipes? Any advice on how best to disguise them would be helpful. (Uploaded a photo, but no idea...
