if he has shut off either the supply to the f and e or from the f and e to the boiler u have no water going into the boiler therefore if your heating is on, the boiler is running dry and u will come into a lot of problems

if it is a pressurised heating system then drain it, if u have a f and e cistern in the loft then plug the feed and vent and this will stop the water in the pipes coming out, works the same principle as aucking water into a straw then puttung your thimb over the end, the water stays in the straw...

is the main cast iron pipe in or outside the house? and if it is in can u acess it ?, if it is outside u should cut a timesaver branch into it and repipe it, this is fairly straightforward to do, however u need a grinder, and a core drill, make sure u wrap the plastic adaptors threads in ptfe...

the gurgling noises sounds like there could be air in the system, try bleeding your radiators, and if the leaky pipe is connected to the f and e cistern then it is either the cold main supply to the cistern or the feed from the cistern to the boiler, either way it shouldnt make a difference as...

if u wanna use speedfit pipe n fittings, best use it inside as its really used to make running pipe and making connections easier and not for its looks, i personally dont like speedfit, i prefer hep2o if using plastic but speedfit is handy as u can disconnect the connections easilly if u need...
