bathroom waste - minimising holes through exterior wall

I am relocating the bathroom and as a result need to take waste water out through the 60-80cm wide stone wall. Id like to minimise the number of holes I have to dig through the wall, so was wondering: Can I link the basin waste to the pan connector somehow? And if this is possible, could I...

Electric UFH between battens for engineered wood?

Trouble is those plinth heaters are bloomin ugly! And a bit noisy - hence the search for alternatives...

Electric UFH between battens for engineered wood?

Hiya - thanks for your reply - I understand about the need to insulate below, and am not bothered if its mat or foil or tube/wires (not sure on correct term for electric!). I am wondering if there is a system (mat or otherwise) that either sits on thin insulation, or can be fitted above thin...

Electric UFH between battens for engineered wood?

We have no wall space in the kitchen to install rads, so are thinking of installing electric underfloor heating instead. (Electric cos we dont imagine it will be on all the time, we dont want to dig up the concrete slab and we dont want to lose room height). Is there a system that might work...

How long to leave acros under new lintel?

Thanks, and sorry for rubbish confusing posts. The pour is done - it went in in two lots, half yesterday along with some rebar, half today. Ive got a 2kW plug in rad in the room which is definitely keeping the chill off, but not baking the concrete. The builders come back on Monday to remove...

How long to leave acros under new lintel?

Hello, My posts are confusing - sorry! The first one was written as if the builders had dont eh job, when in fact they were half way through. Acros are supporting the steel lintels. The builders are pouring an "end" to one of the stone walls, effectively a column that butts up and ties into...

How long to leave acros under new lintel?

It is structural work, being done in two stages so poured to half height at present. We are close enough to the sea that so far the innards of the house havent frozen, but I imagine we are only a degree or three above 0. Met office say its 3 degrees anyway. No frost protection on the...

How long to leave acros under new lintel?

Thanks for the reply. Its not warm and dry, our house has no central heating (yet) its effing freezin The lintel is actually 3 x 3.2m steels side by side with spacers, resting on padstones that are 25cm deep x wall width (45cm) x 35cm. If you can imagine a house that a kid would...

How long to leave acros under new lintel?

Just a quickie - Ive tried a search and cant find the answer: New lintel gone in between two stone walls, and is supporting part of the first floor external wall. The builders have poured concrete shuttering (with padstones on top) to support both ends of the lintel, and tie it in to the...

can I fit pipes & rads then a plumber fit the boiler?

thanks kevplumb Im ringing around plumbers/heating engineers now and most are booked up for a couple of months. Good news I guess, but very chilly here in the meantime. As an aside, we are off the mains and Ive been getting conflicting advice about whether oil or gas might be best. Care to...

can I fit pipes & rads then a plumber fit the boiler?

As the title says. Reason being that Im trying to keep costs down by doing easier/sensible stuff myself. The boiler will be gas or oil and will be in the currently empty ground floor utility room beneath the bathroom (which has room for an airing cupboard). If I route all the rad pipes to...

    how to make lintel safe???

Just had another thought - given that the lintels rest on bricks that arent tied into the stone wall, does this mean the structural engineeers calcs are no longer valid? And if I ask the builder to remove the existing bricks and re-do the pillar from scratch, would I need to re-consult the SE...

    how to make lintel safe???

Structural engineer did the calcs, but wouldnt have known about the bricks and would have assumed stone. The padstone the builder used doesnt seem to be as large as the SE spec either (fits neatly under 6" of the beam ends for the wall width, but doesnt seem to be deep enough).

    how to make lintel safe???

We have just had two rooms knocked together, which needed 3 steel beams to be installed in place of the original exterior stone wall. Before installing the beams, the builder said he would take them over some brickwork, so that they were resting in the stone of the house. Due to the size of...

Quote for triple glazed windows - seems to good to be true

Another firm worth a try and given glowing reports on the green building forum are Russel Timbertech, based in Glasgow. No triple glazed advertised on their website, but they do provide it and for not that much more than double glazed equivalent. http://www.russelltimbertech.co.uk/index.php...

Back boiler and gas CH "linked up" system

One last one :D Ive jsut read about "H2" panels, which seems to be pretty clever - do these negate the need for a neutraliser?

Back boiler and gas CH "linked up" system

Thanks - a good link (confusing if you dont know much about central heating systems, but I am learning!) Most of what I know comes from boilerstoves.co.uk which a good site, but lacking on nitty gritty. Is a neutraliser an absolute must if linking systems up (assuming a linked system is...
