Electric UFH between battens for engineered wood?

We have no wall space in the kitchen to install rads, so are thinking of installing electric underfloor heating instead. (Electric cos we dont imagine it will be on all the time, we dont want to dig up the concrete slab and we dont want to lose room height).
Is there a system that might work for this? Most I have found seem to need insulated board below, then battens on top. Is there a "skinny" version that involves insulating between battens?

you can get one thats like a mat, but a would have thought that if its a concrete floor your going to lose a lot of heat/money getting it warm.

Hiya - thanks for your reply - I understand about the need to insulate below, and am not bothered if its mat or foil or tube/wires (not sure on correct term for electric!). I am wondering if there is a system (mat or otherwise) that either sits on thin insulation, or can be fitted above thin insulation between battens. Anyone?

Trouble is those plinth heaters are bloomin ugly! And a bit noisy - hence the search for alternatives...
