    Extending T&E in backbox

I've noticed that a spur coming off a socket in my property is just a little too short. Whoever did it made it just a few mm shy, and as a result the wire is under a large amount of tension and I worry it'll slip out and cause a hazard. If I want to extend it 20mm in order to reduce the tension...

Just run a new spur from an existing socket, and when I turned off the switch, there is a tiny flash

Thanks guys, much love. Will turn things off at the unit first in future. It's a pretty good visual deterrent, I'm glad I had the light off, I never considered that a socket has to dump the current somewhere. Thanks for setting me straight Have a good weekend!

Just run a new spur from an existing socket, and when I turned off the switch, there is a tiny flash

Thanks for the replies guys, it doesn't spark if the radiator is already switched off - do I assume it's just arcing because the contact is being broken? It's definitely not a loose connection, everything is tightly in place. I have live in live, neutral in neutral, earth in earth, with a...

Just run a new spur from an existing socket, and when I turned off the switch, there is a tiny flash

Hi all I've got a spur running from an existing socket, and the wiring, as far as I can tell, is fine. I have an oil-filled radiator connected to it at the moment, and I happened to switch it off at the socket when the lights in the room were off, and I noticed that directly behind the switch...

Changing two way light to one way light?

I've not yet detached the switches, but will take some pictures when I do. Thanks! Unfortunately, the smart bulbs aren't an option for me. After years of Phillips hue, I don't want to have lights continuously on drawing power, however small. I'm going the next best route and installing tapo...

Changing two way light to one way light?

HI everyone, In my downstairs and upstairs hallway, each floor has a light switch that operates both the upstairs lights and the downstairs lights. If I want to change it so the upstairs switch only turns on the upstairs lights, etc, is it just a case of removing the approrite wires, or is...

Is there a decent external trunking for electrical cables that actually looks nice?

Thanks Notch and Eric for the d-line suggestion, I'll go with that. It's definitely better than the square one. Much appreciated

Is there a decent external trunking for electrical cables that actually looks nice?

HI everyone, I'm just redoing my living room that has a couple of spurs running from an electrical socket, and the previous installer didn't chase the cables into the wall, and I'm not judging them, because I can't be bothered to either - they used that awful square box trunking, and it looks...

Please help me understand this wiring

Unfortunately, I had to move the location of the light, which left the sheathing way too far back to cut the wires down. That would have been my preferred method in the first place, but the new light didn't fit in the space the old light was, and needed to be located 100mm further away. The...

Please help me understand this wiring

I think that's one issue I'm not going to be able to fix, as I don't want to cut the wires back as there's not much cable in there. Is it not being neat a danger? I assumed the jacket on the wires prevents any issues? If it's literally a fire hazard, I'll definitely fix

ah cool, OK, that's already done. It's just one of the standard cheapo enclosures from Wickes that clips shut, will that be adequate?

Please help me understand this wiring

It's not a downlighter, just for reference, does that change anything? As in none of the light itself is in the ceiling - I already have the terminal block in one the cheap terminal cases, is that OK?

Please help me understand this wiring

Done! Thanks Pete, appreciate the help, it's all working. Just a quick question: I didn't have room to house any of the cabling inside the new light, so I had to push everything, including the new terminal, back into the ceiling into all the fibreglass insulation. Is that OK, or is it worth...

Please help me understand this wiring

lol great advice. Having taken down the old light, the wiring makes sense to me much more now, I think the other wires were throwing me off a bit. Thanks for the help, I'll drop a reply to let you know I haven't blown the house up!

Please help me understand this wiring

OK, so essentially, I'm keeping all the terminal blocks in place, and the only thing I'm actually doing is sticking the light on the end of where the old light was?

Cool mate, thanks. So in this instance, treat the red as neutral black/blue, and the brown as live red/brown? Or have I completely misunderstood you?

Please help me understand this wiring

Hi Pete, Hey thanks for the reply. So the colours make sense, that's all good, but the brown sleeved one is the single live I need? Is there a reason why the red isn't live in this instance? Do I take it that I can just leave the rest capped off and stuff them into the ceiling?
