Yes the whole valve was changed and yes the water flow is deffinately correct. Today I managed to check after the heating had shut off and the valve hade not reset to the default 'water only' setting so it does look like the valve has gone tits up.

The valve was changed 4 months ago because the previous one was faulty and not moving across to allow the central heating to come on.

Any (clean) suggestions as to how I can check if the ball has become loose?

The radiators don't always heat up when no heat has been called for by the thermostat, but sometimes they do. :shock:

I will guess that you have to give it a bit too much muscle to kill the mechanism... so just gentle pressure till you feel it reach the stop to close it?
