our high street and others in nearby towns are majority pound shops ,charity shops, bookmakers , cash generators and pie shops, but this is anywhere in the country where the big supermarket has opened...all the huge supermarkets have killed the high streets off ..mind you the local councils dont...

Do not phone openreach if its working ok they will charge you about £130 just for a callout...its not hard to upgrade the nte/bt80 and wiring but get the local paper and you should see a ad from a ex bt engineer ...just get some quotes...at a guess about 30-40 quid
We bought some of the cheap bog roll and it would not sink, flush after flush and the tough little ******* would not go down without a fight....tried another and seems ok..........as for the fruit/veg which we eat plenty these are from the local market and as somebody already said cheaper too...

Cajar, you could be right as you said there is grey duct and blue rope...quite common with bt services but I have never seen them housed in a box like that..I also thought phone line but there appears to be to many wires..
