Earth is reading 10v when tested

Cool, I'll do that tomorrow with a better torch. I tried to get a picture of that but it was too dark with just the iPod light. I don't think it shows anything though, from memory it was just a thick cable and no sign of the cables inside, but I'll check again tomorrow.

Earth is reading 10v when tested

Also could the lights 'up/down' issue be due to lack of power? When we turn the shower on, the spotlights in the kitchen dim. Not just dim then come back up, they dim, for the entirety of the shower, until it's turned off and they return to full brightness. I'd say they lose about 10% light...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

Here are some (really bad, sorry) images as promised. There appears to be one cable coming in (there's one line coming in from the upstairs of the garage, down to the meter, encased in black rubber I think, or plastic. Quite thick. Then it comes out of the meter, as separate cables, up to the...

Not according to him no. It looks like it's just us.

Earth is reading 10v when tested

I don't hold up much hope for the wiring though. In the utility room there are two wall switches, one for the tumble dryer and one for the washing machine. The one for the tumble dryer works fine. But the one for the washing machine only works if you have the one for the tumble dryer on...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

Exactly why I wanted to get a leccie in next year when I've saved up to get it moved and updated if necessary (I'm assuming we're looking at hundreds for that, hence the saving part). I'd assume with my lights going up and down, albeit in small amounts, that something needs updating. Knowing...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

It's a semi but it's in the country and is served via overhead supply with the supply coming in at the same height for each property. It's a board with switches. It looks like the board was upgraded when they had the extension done in about 1995, but how much upgrading was done I'm not sure...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

The fuse board is, the meter is further down (eye level). Can I take a photo of the meter, would that suffice? I realise dealing with me about electrics is like pulling teeth, so appreciate the help.

Earth is reading 10v when tested

I can try but as I say it's 9-10 feet up a wall and even with the ladder I have, I'm on tip-toes to reach it. I can try with a camera though and see what comes out.

Heh. Job for somebody more competent then!

Earth is reading 10v when tested

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. With regards to the TT and TN-C-S, I don't actually know what this means, sorry. How could I tell what I have (or can I? Is that a job for someone more competent?) I was going to get an electrician out next year to look at the board as I don't think...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

Live to earth and Earth to neutral. He used one of those tester kits to check. In the end he disconnected the cables so he could work on it and then reconnected them, but I'm just a bit worried that there's 10v of electricity coming down the earth cable. Or somehow being transferred to the...

Earth is reading 10v when tested

I had a Mira engineer round today to service the shower. The shower was installed by the previous owners. When he turned off the electricity supply to the shower and removed the shower casing and tested the L to E and E to N, he found that the Earth cable was showing a 10.8v reading. Oddly...

Removed chimney leaking on ceiling - advice

Just had a chimney removed and before it was removed it was leaking on the living room ceiling (upstairs chimney breast removed, downstairs had been removed previously). The builder got up on the roof but couldn't see any obvious reason for the leaks. Flaunching and flashing were all fine. He...

Steel beam with no fire board or paint but still signed off

It mentioned lofts a fair bit, but in most if not all circumstances, in the context of loft conversions I think.

Steel beam with no fire board or paint but still signed off

Probably both. I was just handed a sheet about steel beams and it says it needs to be fire proofed either by the paint or by being encased in two sheets of plasterboard (or single sheet of fireboard).

Steel beam with no fire board or paint but still signed off

I totally agree with you. It wouldn't make sense. But the only piece in the building regs I've ever been able to find is that steel beams need to be fireproofed. I couldn't find any 'but not if 'X' applies' type logic. Plus as it was holding up something structural (chimney breast) whether...

Steel beam with no fire board or paint but still signed off

Well, yes. But building regs doesn't cover existing, only new, and the only building regs I could find re: steel beams was that they had to be fire proofed, either by plasterboard (or fire board) or intumescent paint.

Steel beam with no fire board or paint but still signed off

Sorry, yes, you can tell I'm not a builder! :) It's fully exposed in the loft, but not in a room. Essentially it's holding up the remainder of the chimney breast but is above the ceiling. It has some rock wool around it (the loft is covered in it) but otherwise it's in the open in the loft...
