    No main earth in property

DNO ? TN.... I am a gas fitter and dont speak this lingo ! My industry is one where if I am not allowed to say "it was alright when I left it" If I do gas work and become aware that part of the system is dangerous I am obliged by law to make it safe. I am staggered that a person...

    No main earth in property

My firm is installing a new heating system. The electrician who we contracted to sort the boiler electrics has confirmed that there is no main earth whatsoever to the property. He has to put an earth spike in and bond all pipes as required which includes leaving an earth wire for supplier to...

    Pre cast flue too small

Is the flue system on an end gable wall? Or is it a party wall with neighbours or internal room wall. If its the latter you may not have enough depth. You should be able to pay a small cost for a flue survey. If the starter block is that small it may well be that it is an older type...

    No chimney

Our thoughts must go to the family after this tragic event. However, are we now to believe that manufacturers are allowed to make appliances that in the event the gas pressure is too great either by negligence or perhaps a faulty meter govenor the appliance could actually kill someone ...

New fireplace + gas fire problem

£50 quid is not bad. Although if you have paid someone already its getting expensive! We upgrade precast flues every day. Existing gas fire should be removed, use a torch and mirror to look up into flue blocks for signs of blockage, no cracks or gaps allowed whatsoever in base of flue...

    Replacement Combi ......which one ?

Just fitted a Vokera 35 yesterday. No integral clock ! and no facility for fitting one, which means external controls. Previous boiler had integral clock so more expense required to make the new boiler fully automatic.

New fireplace + gas fire problem

[Why do precast flues cause you so many problems Anjme? ] They were not designed, 40 years ago, with inset fires in mind. Often the walls are plastered directly over the concrete flue blocks causing cracking in the wall. The flue block depth is often very shallow, it does not always...

New fireplace + gas fire problem

Of all my installs precast flues cause the most problems. I am not familiar with this fire who supplied it ? Supplying a canopy "in case of flue problems" sounds awful ! rather like a mechanic giving you an anchor after he has checked your brakes on the car !

New fireplace + gas fire problem

I install gas fires as part of my business. If I saw a post like this from one of my customers I would be horrified ! Have you lost confidence with the installer ? Has he refused to return to satisfy your obvious worries ? From reading the posts: 1. It is not uncommon for a new...

    myson apollo explodes!

from your description sounds like the pilot is too small to light the main gas burner. Pilot could be slightly blocked with lint or dust so when main gas enters burner chamber there is a delay before the pilot lights the main burner causing explosive ignition when boiler tries to fire.

    isolating valve in pipe runs

use "full bore" isolating valves some "ballofix" type valves reduce the internal diameter of the pipe and can restrict the flow to the rads.

    Gas fire keeps cutting out.

your comments about " then the noise from the fire begins " leads me to believe that the burner may be "lighting back" when it makes the noise again look directly under the burner if you see a small blue flame under the burner or if there is signs of soot then the burner is in need of repair...

    capped off gas pipe

Is this safe or should it be capped of with a soldered end cap? Technically only compression fittings can be used on gas where they are accesible and not therefore under floorboards. I agree with other posts if it has been there ages leave it.

    Boiler opinions

I get frustrated by other engineers comments "bang them on the wall" . Whilst I agree it would be favourable for me to fault find on all the various combis I fit I am honest enough to admit I do not have enough knowledge to efficiently fault find. Lets be honest having read most of the...

    tricity bendix dishwasher

thanks for help and advice. Managed to trace damaged connector block in wiring loom. Connector block was covered in black verdigri, similar to stuff that clings to tiles in shower or bathrooms. Wires shorted out and not sending power to solonoid. New connector block fitted job sorted. Has...

running gas pipe into fire place....

I move restrictor elbow fittings all the time. It is much more difficult if the surround is existing, but not impossible. First you have to check the access directly under existing chimney/fireplace, commonly it is found that full width of the chimney carries on down to the foundations under...

Most of us know the law is a minefield and you take your life in your own hands walking through it. Thats why the lawyers make a good living because simple folk, like myself, cannot understand half the stuff the 'powers that be' issue out to us mortals as 'Laws of the land'. So if enough...
