    A leak or pipe noise?

After running the 1st floor bathroom washbasin tap for upwards of 6/7 seconds (hot or cold) down an unplugged sink there is a drip noise from underneath the floorboards. I say 'drip' but it is also similar to the 'creak/tick' noise that pipes can make. It also happens to a lesser extent when...

    Malwarebytes software

You can beg my pardon if you want! :D You were suggesting that real time protection is included in the free version and that if I didn't have it I must have the old version. You were wrong. Watch my lips. THE FREE ONE DOES NOT HAVE REAL TIME PROTECTION AS STANDARD. The fact that you...

    Malwarebytes software

I believe mine is the latest free version (1.75.0.1300) and it definitely doesn't have real time protection - unless you purchase the protection module or register for a free trial.

    Malwarebytes software

I have the free version - which I believe does not offer real time protection - so I don't have it ticked to load automatically. I just load it from the desk top icon when I want to update/run a scan. I find it works fine with with my XP. Other security is the free Panda Cloud Antivrus...

    Noisy Baxi combi boiler

This runs perfectly fine most of the time. But if the CH is running and I flush the loo or turn on a tap, it starts making a low whiney noise. It will stop if I turn on a hot tap (not tried the cold one). Is this a symptom of an air lock and if so do I have to get in a Corgi person...

    Lights dimming briefly

I have had this problem intermittently over the past fortnight. We do sometimes get this as a community - when it is often a problem with our power supply and the prelude to a full scale outage. Though one time it was caused by a fault in a neighbour's system. But I think in these instances it...

Damp coming up through tiled floor - help!

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure about the water table rising. The house is built into a hillside. At the rear is a patio then a garden slope. At the front there is an access lane then a drop into the field below which slopes down. So I would have thought this meant natural drainage? That said, who...

Damp coming up through tiled floor - help!

This is what I was concerned about. I'm going to dry out the area and wait and see. Cheers!

Damp coming up through tiled floor - help!

I live in an old stone cottage circa 1840 (cavity walls filled with rubble). I have no idea if there is any sort of damp proofing. The ground floor is all one room and was tiled by the previous occupants (I wonder why? Hmm...). I have a central rug and recently discovered the bit under the...

    Sanding sealer necessary on beams?

I'm trying out a variety of finishes on small areas of my stripped pine beams. Current road-test is of Briwax (clear because I an trying not to darken them too much). I see Briwax does a 'sanding sealer'. Would this improve the finish? Or would it make it easier to get a patina? (on it's own the...

Painting over a veneered false beam

It's made of some composite stuff and was clad with veneer to copy some existing real beams (vandalised with similar veneer and which I am stripping and renovating). I suspect it was put up to mask either wires or pipes - a neighbouring cottage has something similar. So I don't want to start...

Painting over a veneered false beam

I'm painting over a silly little pretend beam with a black veneer cladding but stain from the veneer is leaking through where I have had to use some polyfilla and I suspect it will leak through the paintwork too. I was going to get some stain stop but I already have some damp seal. Will this do...

Stripped pine beams - stripper residue, lead & finishing

I started stripping my beams with Nitromors Superstrip and ended up using Klingstrip as it was quicker. Both leave residue and it seems I can go on forever removing any colouration. They recommend water then either meths or vinegar. Just wondered if there was an easier way. It's in a furnished...

    Water in porch

Hi I have a porch with a stone flagged floor. I am getting an occasional problem with puddles of water appearing in one spot on the porch floor - I think the water is seeping up through the cement join. Edit: Oops how do I delete? Found out it is a run off from the door when opened. Dohh.....

I can't make up my mind. I'm having a look at the neighbours beams.

    Tom the plasterer on Masterchef

There's a Bradford plasterer in the final four on MasterChef. Have you seen him? I'm wondering if business is up since his new found fame. I'm thinking of booking him. 'A couple of walls and a three course meal please!'

    A simple washing machine disconnection...

My washing machine was plumped in upstairs in a tight space where the airing cupboard used to be. Anyhow it was broke and I offered it on Freecycle. With lots of heaving they eventually got it out - but a pipe was leaking. I put a bucket under it and contacted a plumber. The next day there...
