    To fill the depth break up some old bricks and build them in so they are sub flush, leaving them rough to give a key and once they are set render over to finish. lightly wet around the hole before building into it and this will help the mortar adhere.

    Sounds like a sticky starter solinoid to me, could be a bad earth to the engine or low battery charge or a combination of each. Check your battery charge. check your braided earth to the engine and if they are OK change the starter.
