    Stopping sheet steel from rusting.

I've got some sheet steel that over a year has developed a light coat of rust, despite being indoors. What's the best non-flammable coating to use? It's out of sight so doesn't need to look pretty. Would car spray paint or lacquer do the job?

    Rendering a retaining wall

Couple of quick question if I may; how deep does the scut mix need to be - just enough to cover the mesh? Also, measuring by the bucket, do you mean to only mix one bucket's worth at a time?

    What an in-depth answer, cheers!

    Rendering a retaining wall

Hi guys, Our front garden has a retaining wall, as do our neighbours. All were rendered, but when we moved in, ours was so blown it needed removing sharpish. I need to replace the top courses and add a couple more, and repoint the truly wrecked areas of the wall, but it will certainly need...

Show pump connections; washer or threaded?

I do indeed! Good call; I will have it at the ready. Cheers.

Show pump connections; washer or threaded?

Great, thank you; I figured it would be ok, but best to check with those who know what they're doing. I've since located the cold isolator some way away, but it's good to know I don't need to bother.

Show pump connections; washer or threaded?

Not yet. ;) I can isolate the hot, but not the cold; I assume the inputs don't intermix within the pump? It's the hot output I need to sort.

Show pump connections; washer or threaded?

I've got a Nabis d12091 shower pump, and I've discovered a leak on the hot output. Before I take it apart and put it back together, I assume that his will be a seal by washer, rather than by threaded connection. If so, is there any particular washer I should be using for the connector? Last...

    A loft full of flies

If it's bluebottles or the like, it is, as you say, down to a dead animal. Only one way to deal with that, really - locate the source. Was there ever a mouse problem? Don't worry about them eating the structure, you're safe there. ;)

    Painting a radiator with emulsion

I did all the radiators in my last place with the same satinwood paint I'd bought for the skirting. Looked fine, and did not discolour in the further few years I was there.

Open vented system; air in top radiator.

    Shameless one-time bump.

Open vented system; air in top radiator.

Hitherto I've only had combi sealed systems, so forgive any misconceptions I have. New home, older system - probably installed around 99/00, Potterton Kingfisher with a couple of header tanks in the loft; there's a power shower feeding out of the hot water cistern. Pump needed replacing, but...

    12v dimmable downlights to LED

Ah thank you; the ceiling void is a pretty good size, so hopefully they'll be fine. I'm going to put some fire retardant on the fabric as an extra measure.

    12v dimmable downlights to LED

One of our spare bedrooms is a loft conversion with dimmable 12v halogen down-lighters; it's being re-purposed as a cinema room. There will be fabric on the ceiling to absorb stray light, but I still need lights for maintenance and cleaning. Halogen lights are obviously no good as they get...

    Temporary chimney plugs (ventilation)

Cheers! To be honest I've not really felt a breeze coming down or going up the chimney - but it must have an impact on the room, as it's a ruddy great hole to the open sky.

    Temporary chimney plugs (ventilation)

Ah cheers, I'll not stress too much about it, then!

    Temporary chimney plugs (ventilation)

Hi chaps, Our new place has reasonably sized fireplace, which is great,as we always wanted an open fire for the occasional bit of evening ambiance. It's not going to be used too often, so I figure I should put some sort of plug in place during inactivity. I'm aware of chimney balloons and the...

Brick path repair; brush dry or wet repoint?

I've got some brick cleaner from the old place, which did work faily well with a bit of elbow grease. Hopefully it won't come to using it!

Brick path repair; brush dry or wet repoint?

Cheers chaps. I've got a mortar gun, so I guess I should just do it that way to be safe. Be a real pain if the cement hung around on the top.
