    Garage electrics

Thanks for your response Luminaire. The boiler is on a fused switch, and the alarm is on another fused switch. The lights connect directly to the socket (spur) from the ring main.

    Garage electrics

Hi, i found out last night that the output from one of my trip switches in my CU (a B32 fitted after a 30mA RCD in split load CU) feeds the garage sockets on a ring, and the garage lights are connected to a spur socket from within the ring, the house alarm and kitchen lights (in a rear...

    Confusing earth at switch

Hi, On the back of the dimmer, between the permanent Live and the Earth, measures 123 VAC. As for connecting the earth of the lighting circuit to the earth of the rest of the house, could i just have a look in the consumer unit, see if there is an earth wire in the cable that goes to the...

    Confusing earth at switch

Phew, that's not so bad then ! The house was built in 1935 so it sounds as though the lighting circuit may not be earthed.....seems strange but hey. I checked another switch, also downstairs and on same fuse circuit, which measured 120VAC between switched live and earth. The dimmer...

    Burying wires into wall

Thanks for your quick reply, i am trying to disconnect it at the sourc (dimmer switch) which is also confusing, see other post just submitted. I am however aware that this is just the switched live and the neutral will still be connected. Unfortunately i can't get above the ceiling (just...

    Confusing earth at switch

Hi, I am confused with the wiring on my dimmer switch...please help. Basically, when i measure with my DVM between the earth connection and the switched live (ON) on my dimmer switch it shows 101VAC. Is this normal as i am concerned with the state of our wiring, we recently moved in ...

    Burying wires into wall

Hi, i need to remove some wall lights which means that i will have to cut the wires, push them into the wall and cover them with plaster/filler. I am just wondering if there is a special way to do this, ie i would just cut the cable (after switching off mains of course) and tape the end with...

    Cherry Tree near to house

Hi People, I have recently moved house and now have a 10ft cherry tree in my front garden which is 8ft away from the front wall of my house. I am concerned about the roots growing into and damaging the foundations, and also wondering how tall the tree is likely to grow. Should I be...

Combi pilot flame keeps going out

Just thought i would give you a quick update. Since my last post, i have vacuumed inside the boiler including the gas burners, and set the timer so that the boiler has about 6 hrs rest during night as it was on 24hrs before. Since then it has not locked out once ! So at the moment all...

    moving BT junction box

I was advised here that the CS1308B cable is the correct cable that is used by BT, are you saying this is not the case. What cable would BT expect to see as part of the installation?

    moving BT junction box

I'm just planning to go from the small white box under the gutter, that takes the cable from the telegraph pole, and run thie new wire down the outside of the house so that i can move the BT socket to a more suitable location. Could this cause a problem then? I don't intend to use the earth...

    moving BT junction box

OK so the larger diameter internal wire in the cable is for an earth connection, should i be connecting this anywhere when i reposition my BT socket or is it a "just in case" cable? thanks, Carl

    moving BT junction box

Well i have just received my CW1308B black cable, 17 metres in total. The outside diameter is about 9mm and its a 10 pair cable also with a solid centre core a bit like a tv aerial cable centre. I assume this is just to help with the shaping of the cable around corners or is there another use...

    Don't know house alarm code.....help !

You're absolutely right Space Cat. I do have a SAB and my back-up battery only measured 6V when it should have been 12V. I have now managed to reset to the factory default code and then change it to my own choice, i apologised to the neghbours afterwards as the SAB did indeed sound for a while...
