    Cable termination

I have a single story extension out the back, housing the kitchen. It has a flat roof. Earlier I had the ceiling changed and took the opportunity to install a couple of runs of trunking, the idea being that if ever should I need to run a cable from front to back, I could just rod it through...

Tips for chasing into hard & brittle brick ?

Brick dust is offensive. It will clog a vacuum cleaner in a nano second. Once the dust settles, sweep up what you can and maybe even get the next lot with a damp cloth. Don't get a Dyson on it, the filter clogs almost at once and then needs washing and drying for 12 hours. Henry lasts a...

Fluorescent light - usually only works when thumped!

I confess that I have not read the Act in question however, my understanding of the SoGA is that like most UK law, there's a lot of use of the word "reasonable". In particular, the goods have to last for a "reasonable" amount of time. In assessing that, the court would look at how much you...

Blue flash from 1 gang to 2 gang socket converter

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spark_gap#Visual_entertainment. You could think of the two wires of the Jacobs Ladder as representing the position of the switch contacts over time... I have my own theory on the phenomenon, I think what you're seeing is Cherenkov Radiation* * I jest

Fluorescent light - usually only works when thumped!

I Googled and I Googled and I found an answer not. This leads me to suspect that it's not really that important, so I'd probably order that starter and see what happens. My guess is that your lamp will start.

Tips for chasing into hard & brittle brick ?

Whichever way you go about it, chasing will always be a pita. You have three main options: 1) the old fashioned way, with hammer and chisel. It's really, really, really slow and really, really boring too. You can try drilling holes but you'll get bored of that even more quickly than...

    Dodgy Cooker/Oven Electrics

Just hold the socket as you extract the plug and you shouldn't have a problem. I would check the power rating of the appliances (it should be written on a plate/label on the back). That will give you an idea of what current we're dealing with. In theory it's less than 13A per appliance as...

Is using Conduit for 2.5mm T&E ok?

I prefer 20mm round conduit as you can attach it properly to the backbox. Oval just looks a bit crap stuffed into the hole. That said, dry lining boxes don't tend to have 20mm openings and also as they're a bit crap anyway it doesn't matter too much if the conduit looks crap too :-)

Power and CAT5 Run for Garden Shed

Engage your sparky before the work starts. Everyone on here will have their own opinion of how it should be cabled. Your sparky will have his/her own view too. Also, they'll likely not be very happy using an existing cable that disappears into the ground and reappears somewhere else, even if...

    Dodgy Cooker/Oven Electrics

Wow, what a work of art. Is that right hand plug on a piece of T&E too? I'm assuming the hob and oven are electric and not gas with electric ignition? Do you know the current draw or power of the oven & hob? Do you if it's on it's own circuit or is it wired to the kitchen sockets along...

    Charging rechargeable batteries

I've never really paid much attention, just stick them on until I remember to take them off. Some batteries don't really like being over charged but I've never had a problem with NiMH's. Nowadays I have one of those fancy chargers that does it all for you.

tip needed to replace door phone

Wow, what an amazing wiring job. I think this post might be better in the Alarms, CCTV and Telephones forum, as it'll be more likely to been seen by someone who can provide a good answer.

    Consumer unit breakers

Ahh, so the point is that although you have the power to affect a better outcome you don't believe you should* as you believe that the responsibility is on the other person. You might be interested to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment ** * By better outcome, I mean using...

    Consumer unit breakers

I was coming more from the angle that BAS might achieve a more positive outcome by simply presenting the same suggestion in a different way. I'm trying to understand BAS's logic. Maybe he actually believes that everyone else is wrong and his approach of calling people stupid f***ers really...

    Painted wall cracking

The paint (Dulux Matt Emulsion) was applied with a roller pretty evenly. The wall was replastered about year and a half ago, we painted it with two coats of white and two coats of the Dulux Matt Emulsion back then (after the wall had fully dried out) and had no issues. Earlier this year we...
