    Small square bricks/ready made headers?

Thanks for that. On a simular subject I may decide to use reclaimed bricks, impirial size in order to get a closer match to the original brickwork. Is it possible/a good idea to use impirial sized bricks with metric size breeze blocks? Maybe use wall ties with one end bent to 90 degrees from...

    New external garage

I recently built a garage of 42m^2. It did not need planning permission as it was classified as PD (it was under 2.5m high and covered less than half the garden) but as it was over 30m^2 in size did need building control. You first need to find out the details of your local building control...

    Piecemeal dry-lining

Just wondering. If I was to dry-line each room of my house as it's re-decorated over a period of about 5-8 years, would I have to pay any cash to BC? I notice that in the list of charges for BC the following: Renovation of a thermal element to a single dwelling £662.40 But I seem to...

    Replacing a door and BC.

My back door is starting to go a bit rotten thus I am thinking about replacing it. However I don't like the idea of having to pay building control £108 just to replace a door costing about the same price. It seems an extortinate amount to pay to me. I know that I could pay someone FENSA...

    EOL terminals

I have a PIR sensor here with 8 terminals. +12v, -12v, 2 for tamper, 2 for relay and 2 marked 'EOL'. Anyone have any clue as to what the 'EOL' terminals are for? All my other sensors only have 6 terminals.

    Room sealed wood burner?

Thinking about building an extension and I'd like to have a wood burner in it. However I have read that to have a wood burner you basically need a hole in your wall to allow fresh air into the room for the fire. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a 'room sealed' wood burner which...

    Is my 16a MCB defective?

My workshop has a radial socket circuit fed from a hager 16a b type MCB. I heat the space with a 3kw fan heater. I normally turn the heater off before using any power tools to avoid overloading the circuit. However today I was cutting some wood with a circular saw with a vacuum cleaner and...

What is the World coming to?

Or if gable faces a highway, such as a corner plot. I seem to remember reading about someone who got caught out by that one, they had to remove the gable. If doing something so expensive, maybe worth getting a LDC (lawful development cert).

    Rawlplug interset plasterboard blunder. HELP!

Don't think it's a good idea to put something as heavy as books on a shelf fixed to plasterboard as you may find the books, shelves and a load of plasterboard all over the floor. If it's a stud wall then use a stud detector to locate the studs and fix to those.

Disaster in the making? Advice needed please

Something else which looks worriying is that gap around the doorframe. As it's a garage I belive that should be a FD30 fire door (is it?) and thus that gap should be filled with fire rated expanding foam or simular.
