Putting a washing machine in a garage

My dad has mentioned that he would like to move the washing machine into the garage due to the noise. One thing which worries me though is low tempretures, I belive washing machines can be damaged if exposed to freezing tempretures even if not operating. I suppose I could place a heater in the...

    A lean-to building without a structural floor?

On the subjects of building large 'extenstions' seperated by tiny gaps, this appeal document may make intresting reading: http://www.planningjungle.com/appeal_decisions/61%20Fountains%20Crescent%20-%20Appeal%20Decision%20Notice.pdf Someone built an 'extension' which was much larger than the...

    A lean-to building without a structural floor?

You could build it as a 'conserventory' in which case it's exempt from building regs but IIRC, 75% of the roof needs to be transparent for it to count as a conserventory.

Replacing windows 1930s house header course and no lintel

Are you sure there is no lintel? The headers you see maybe 'snapped headers', bricks cut in half. I have a 1934 house and some of the windows have a header course like that but the 'headers' are half bricks with a wooden lintel behind.

Is this a Victorian soil pipe vent?

I have a simular relic in my front garden. As the sewer and manhole in my driveway are a section 24 public sewer (serves 4 houses), would I have to get the local water authority involved if I wanted shot of the relic? It's in a border so not really in my way but if it's not needed then I will...

    Hanging a wooden top light

You can buy a strong 2-part wood filler called 'repair wood for good' stick some of this in the screw holes and maybe stick a matchstick in for good measure, wait for it to fully cure then drill new holes. If that don't work, you could try chiseling out say 8mm more hinge recess to one side or...

    shared sewer through foundations

The sewer you mention will almost certainly be a public sewer. You will need to obtain consent from your local water authority to build over the public sewer and pay a fee as they will want to inspect the work to make sure it's done properly. I belive you will also need to get full plans...

Amount of support needed for green roof

As the building will be over 30m^2, I belive you will need structural engineer to specify the roof timbers to statisfy building control as it is a 'frame structure'.

Insulating floor in a room with an open fire?

Not sure where best to put this, but I am thinking of re-decorating our front room. As part of this work I'd like to insulate the floor by taking up the floorboards, fitting pieces of kingspan between the joists, supported on screws screwed into the joists so that they stick out a little bit to...

The 10 Worst Permitted Development Loopholes

Please check this PD with me

Sounds ok, one other thing is the house cannot be a listed building. And the new building cannot have a microwave antenna. (a TV aerial to must of us)

Digging up my driveway to install a new gully and services.

I need to dig up part of my driveway in order to install a piece of drain pipe and a gully. One thing I am worried about though is hitting the gas pipe or the water pipe, I know there is a gas pipe buried in there somewhere but have no idea how deep it is or where it is in the width of the...

    Best Eurolock Cylinder to Fit?

I had a lenghty look into europrofile cydlinders. I came to the conclusion that the europrofile design itself is genrally crap as the fixing hole is in the thinnest, weakest part of the lock meaning that almost any europrofile lock can be snapped if enough force is applied to it. The ABS is...

    Small square bricks/ready made headers?

Thanks :) Except I'm not very good with a bolster and hammer and often the brick tends to break in a place other than where I want it to break thus tend to use an angle grinder to cut bricks which while I get a neat edge it takes longer and makes a hell of a lot of dust.

    Small square bricks/ready made headers?

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy bricks of 102.5 x 102.5 x 65mm? Would like to build a cavity wall to look like English bond with header rows. if I can buy ready made headers would save alot of brick cutting. If such bricks exist, is there a techical name for them?

    Approx build cost please?

I don't think you can get a dumper which would fit through a 1m gap thus you would need to use wheelbarrows for getting the spoil to a skip. However the larger 1.5t takeuchi tb016 digger should just fit as it's 980mm wide with the tracks retracted or the micro will fit easy...

    Approx build cost please?

You could hire a 'micro' digger. They are designed to fit through a standard size doorway, the tracks retract inwards and the roll over bar folds down. My site had restricted access but I was able to get a 1.5 t mini digger through the 1.2m gap (tight fit though). The dumper (smallest...

    Approx build cost please?

I recently built a workshop for about £7500 in total. This was 4.1m x 6.2m internal so a little bit smaller. It's been built to full building regs standard with cavity wall with 75mm fibreglass batts. Almost 100% of the work done myself over a 6 month periord (made redundant so working on...

    Architrave...I need advice

I use grab adhisive such as No More Nails, rub down the surface, brush then clean with white spirit, apply grab adhisive to back of architrive and press into place, hold for a few mins while it 'grabs'.
