Thanks for that @Stuckinarut. I have just Googled Siamp cistern valves and there are even some videos on YT that may help me and they aren't silly money so it might be easier for me, as a non-plumber, to buy a complete replacement if they are reasonably easy to fit.

The problem is that even where I have sanded the staining of the timber the staining goes deeper as shown here and surely if I apply more stain then the differences will still show ?
