    Damp block?

Don't be concerned about the lack of metal capping, more dangerous than good in my experience, if the cables are within prescribed zones then don't worry.

    Hairline cracks in plaster

Agreed with Joe, it'll be where the plasterboard meets the block thats cracked I would guess.

how many bags of plaster ?

It may be easier for you to put another angle bead on as you'll have somewhere to work too, if its only blemishes then you could use some easy fill to sort out the odds and ends.

Yes but the whole electrium range was pumping out defective years for two years. Suppose thats the problem when they are churning out cheap tat for screwfix. Its cost them they're reputation amongst a lot of sparks, to sacrifice a household name like wylex was crazy buy they have done it. If you...

    Gyproc moisture resistant tilebacker plasterboard

B&q do sell hardie board. A shower over a bath is as vulnerable as a shower cubicle imo although for a year I wouldnt bother myself, i'd have used standard boards and clad with PVC panels as they are cheap and quick to fit and remove.

Charged £975 for 2 security lights???

Sounds like a bargain to me, Id have thought £1200 would have been a fair price for a quality British tradesman.

    Gyproc moisture resistant tilebacker plasterboard

It can be painted yes, it's not ideal around the shower of bath though, would need tanking or use aquapanel / hardie board.

If the plaster is solid then some filling and sanding may sort this out.

How do I fix this wall?

Are you left with a chalky substance that you can pick through with your finger nail, if so it's the plasterboard core, if its pink and quite tough then its been skimmed.

Looks like your wall paper has been torn off, perhaps it had lifted and there was some damp about the place, a little more info would be a good start here :D

Is this a good idea or am I being stupid?

Install battens on 400mm centers with fixings at 600mm intervals, I would run a head through and fix it into the joists is they are running perpendicular to that wall, install horizontal batten at the bottom too. Pack out the battens so they are plumb, straight and true, try and get the corner...

Dunno what rates are like in surry, does seem a bit high though, As always, get three quotes minimum and ALWAYS check references and view other jobs.

    Dry lining Kithen

With battens on 400mm centers and a foam bond between fixings I would opt for 12mm ply or 18mm osb. A good fat woodscrew into that will hold lots of weight.
