    Running cable in conduit

This is exactly what I was wondering - it's a lovely idea to install conduit but will I ever use it for anything? I think I'll run it between floors in a couple of places but leave it there. I'm also going to put some in he wall where the flat screen tv will go. Cheers folks

    Running cable in conduit

I'm going to run coax and Cat5e cable and like the idea of running in some sort of conduit so I can replace or add to easily in the future without ripping parts of the house apart. What sort of conduit have you folks used for this and in practise have you found it easy to add cables or still...

Trade accounts - Selco, TP, Jewsons etc

I'm going to get a large two storey extension done and will be buying the materials myself. I've used places like Jewsons before without an account and they're far pricier than even B&Q with a tradecard. With a likely materials cost of 25 to 35k what sort of percentage or discount code should...

    DIY concrete garages

Thanks guys - I'll try Ebay. I've also found they only seem to come as a kit which is a shame

    Anyone re-wired their own home?

Thanks for your posts folks - your list of relevant books Prenticeboy is quite a bright and subtler than most way of telling me what I'd be letting myself in for! I might well look down the route of taking some courses and with my background, should be abe to skip the fundamentals one, but...

    Anyone re-wired their own home?

I'm doing an extension for which the BCO is coming in and hence tempted to do the house wiring myself and add it into his checklist for little extra cost. I've done bits of wiring previously and studied electrical engineering so have a good knowledge of the basics. I'd obviously have to learn...

    DIY concrete garages

I'm going to get a concrete garage but looking online but rather than go to places like Hanson and get a kit I want to buy the concrete panels separately, install my own door and build my own roof for it. Anyone ever gone down this DIY route and if so, where did you get the concrete panels from?

    Damp proofing DIY

I've used a resin kit, along with waterproof render on the inside and the combination worked well. I've seen a professional do it and was shocked at how quick, easy (and pricey) it was hence will always do this myself now.

    Demolishing a brick wall...

Doing a major refurb and the structural engineer has signed off two walls (2.5m long as non supporting. Now the job of removing them... Single brick, 20cm thick and having investigated the brick bonds into an outside wall so I need to get it flush for replastering. Looking on the web two...

Erecting fence - how to secure posts into the ground

Concreting in posts is a more involved job and more permanent so I'd like to use 30" steel spikes for erecting a 6 foot fence into soil. Does this sounds sensible and likely to stay upright?

Having to add insulation when replastering external walls

Thank you very much Woody and others, your time and answers are really appreciated. I am very relieved to learn I wont have to mess around with this - the gas bill here is about £20 a month in winter, so must be pretty energy efficient anyway. THanks again!

Having to add insulation when replastering external walls

Hi and many thanks for your replies. Re only having to add insulation if replacing the existing coatis how understood things to be. I anonymously spoke to the BCO last Friday who informed me that adding a new layer of plaster or render means would have to consider ading insualtion if cost...

Having to add insulation when replastering external walls

When replastering 25% of an external wall these state that you must upgrde the insulation too. This appears to involve adding Kingspan or similar. I'm renovating and extending my house and so the BCO will be in for the extension which will be going on alongside the refurb. I'm just reskimming...

Foundations required for new build loft conversion

Thanks for all the replies and explanations. Just to clarify, we're using a structural engineer for the BCO drawings who has extended a house two doors along and the ground conditions were very good so he suspects we'll just need 1m depth. I think he has talked about 60cm wide foundations so...

Black/Dark blue crumbly bricks on internal wall

I'm doing a house refurb and the structural engineer has approved removing two walls. On taking off the plaster they aren't standard brick, but some sort of dark blue/black brick that's very crumbly and weak. Anyone any idea what these are? It's a 1930s house in West London and all the...

Foundations required for new build loft conversion

I'm looking to extend on two floors and like the idea of specifying large enough joists and a roofing structure that leaves the option open to convert the loft into a habitable space in the future. Would I need to go beyond the standard foundation depth to allow for this possible future loft...
