    Sash windows alarms

I'd like to think our house is pretty secure, all apart from 2 sash windows, both at the back of the house; 1 ground level, the other on the 1st floor. I'd like to have an alarm fitted to the windows, and then an alarm box fitted to the side of the house. Is this a job for the...

    Cracked slabs

I layed these few slabs to stand the BBQ on - Marshalls Richmond. The day after I layed them I could see a line running across 3 slabs, I have looked really closely but there is no sign of a crack in the slabs surface. However, I did hit them hard with the rubber hammer so I'm pretty sure...

    Which car?

I will be buying a new car in the next couple of weeks, for 2 adults and a small child - small to middle family car. Is there a trusted website that will advise which cars are worth considering and which are rubbish? Or, anyone have ides of which car is generally well thought of? This...

    Paint still sticky

We had our Lounge decorated, the guy finished about 3 weeks ago. He used satinwood on the cills, it is dry to the touch, however, ornaments still stick a bit when you lift them up. Also, the room still smells of paint. Is this normal? Thanks.

    Decking; fixing joists to beams

I am planning a decking project using the information on this site. I will have posts concreted into footings and my beams coach bolted to the posts, I then lay my joists on top of the beams; - what do I use to fix the joists to the beams to stop them moving about? Many thanks.

    150mm below dpc

The top of my existing patio is level with my dpc but there is a 4" gap filled with shingle between patio and house, the patio also runs towards my house. After reading posts on here I know this isn't ideal, however, I've not had any problems with damp. I'm talking with contractors about...

    Wet edge when rolling

I've read on here that when you roll a ceiling you should always work in bands and keep a wet edge. I have a large ceiling to paint which has loads of spot lights and I reckon it will take me 2 hours to paint, my shoulder will 'play up' after about an hour. Can I paint half the ceiling one...

    2 coats or 3?

    Yes, I used oil-based satinwood.

    2 coats or 3?

I painted our staircase using satinwood (rubbed it down first) and it looked good. I then read on here that a 2nd coat would make it look much better and tougher, so I lightly rubbed it down again and applied a 2nd coat and it looks great. I'm enjoying myself, and considering the knocks it...

    Covering over a picture

Well I say it's black gloss - it looks like it's been on there for years so I just assume it is oil based paint; maybe its gloss or satinwood or something. If I do as Sparkwright says; 'keep undercoating', can I use the satinwood which is self undercoating or should I use a proper undercoat...

    Covering over a picture

We've just moved house and in one of the bedrooms the door has a picture painted on it, in black matt gloss. I am using satinwood throughout upstairs (which is self-undercoating as it says on the tin), can I just go ahead and paint over it? or should I try and rub it off first? I'm hoping it...

    Deck construction

I've done a lot of research and I'm about to build a deck. My main concern is about the supporting posts, do I really need all of them and do they have to be 600mm deep?

How to prepare for new turf

I've just moved into a new property and now have a rough, patchy, weedy back lawn that I'd like to rip-up and replace. I've read the posts on here and now have a pretty good idea of how to go about it; Rip up the old, put in a skip, level (pretty level anyway), Bring-in top soil, gently...

    Manhole cover

Thermo, I agree with that, but on another point if you look closely, if they leave it like that there will be like a double joint gap because they haven't taken the slab to the edges of the manhole tray. But they can't take the slab to the edges of the tray because there are those black...
