Brick on edge to retain gravel

I want to run bricks on edge (side by side, not end to end) at ground level so I can gravel one side and put plants in the other side. I've dug the trench (20 metres in length) and got rid of the dirt. I just need someone to lay the mortar footing and then lay the bricks, butted up against...

    Connecting timber beams

I am going to build an arbour in the garden. The length of the beam will be 13 metres (150 x 47) and will be connected to timber posts (100 x 100). I will buy 3 lengths of beam to make the 13 metres span, I will then connect them together when I get them home. But how should I connect...

    Corner of garden getting waterlogged

A corner of my garden puddles heavily after it has rained, the garden has a wall built all the way around and the lawn falls into this corner. Obviously it is being held there by the wall and the natural fall of the lawn. I'm guessing I should dig a deep hole in the corner and bury a...

Fixing a post to the top of a garden wall

I want to fix a timber post to the top of a brick wall (I'm going to make an arbour). How can I fix the post to the top of the wall? You know how they fix posts outside porches, the post is fixed a couple of inches off the ground. I don't like those bolt down post shoes you can get...

    Engineering bricks?

Thanks for replies - all useful. Fyi; the retaining wall is for a raised planter, holding topsoil so I'm not concerned about it moving. I have just ordered the Chudley book off Amazon. Thanks again.

    Engineering bricks?

Thanks Noseall for the excellent reply, 2 questions; 1/. Does that mean I should have 2 courses of engineering bricks below ground level and also the next 2 above ground level? 2/. You say use a rated brick the entire planter facing, what do you mean? Thanks again.

    Engineering bricks?

Do I have the engineering bricks in the right place for a retaining wall? If it was a free standing garden wall should the engineering bricks be the first 2 courses above the ground level? Any help much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

    Building a ramp

I would like to build a ramp into my garage (about 300mm high) as I'm going to be carting heavy barrow loads of soil through the garage to a skip. What will be the best timber for the job. Many thanks.

    From where? Please.

It's heavy clay and our tip will only accept 1 bag of soil per week! I don't want to hire a small skip and fill it 25% for £110.

I'm going to build some deck. Digging out 20 holes for the supporting posts. This will create a small amount of earth. It's not enough for a small skip and too much to hide in the garden or take to the tip. What's the cheapest way to get this removed? Many thanks.

    Garage door

Will I be able to get away without using a hot air gun? Can't I just scrape the flaking paint off? Thanks.
