    Range Cooker Recommendations

I'm in the market for an all electric cooker with a ceramic or halogen hob 90-100cms in size. It's a big market out there with so many makes that i have never heard of and i would appreciate any recommendations. Many thanks, Calum

Insulating 45x145 Timber Frame External Walls

I'm looking into the best most cost effective way of doing this instead of using the 150mm quilt insulation that the house kit manufacturer supplies in trying to get the u values down a bit. On another thread it was suggested that i use Warmcel, but this thread has deteriorated to the point...

Air Source Heat Pump or Oil Boiler

Thanks also for your reply Agile, maybe not the NOSHEB but you do realise that it's our oil, or at least what's left of it. It seems that the blown Warmcel 500 into wall cavities can only be done by an approved installer. The nearest installer to me is about 300 miles away and wonder...

Air Source Heat Pump or Oil Boiler

Many thanks for your reply Bigburner and confirming my suspicions regarding the ASHP's limitations. I live in the Western Isles and the house will be a kit coming from a mainland manufacturer with 6" studwork conforming to the present regs etc. The importance of airtightness like you say would...

Air Source Heat Pump or Oil Boiler

I'm about to build a 180m timber frame house later this year and as the only onsite power supply is electricity i'm considering a heat pump with underfloor heating. Using economy 7 or 10 to run the pump and heat the hot water with a couple of storage heaters upstairs, maybe. I've also noticed...

Laying Slabs To A Central Drain

I'm about to start laying the slabs in a 5x5mtr area with a drain in the dead centre. Is there a set method for doing this? I've heard of the envelope method and i'm assuming that it's a matter of quartering the area and laying the slabs from the perimeter edge tapering towards the drain with...

    Grouting Sandstone Slabs

Many thanks for the replies chaps. Thankfully though there is nothing but earth and a just finised retaining wall at the moment. So it's compacted hardcore and 2" of mortar with a damp 1 cement to 3 sand grout. Would a couple of inches of hard core be enough?

    Grouting Sandstone Slabs

Thanks for your reply Thermo. I have been told that the DPM is a good idea should i decide to build something on top of the patio in the future. Whe slabs vary in thickness and i thought it would be easier to lay them on a mortar bed which would also be stronger. Is this not a good idea?

    Grouting Sandstone Slabs

I'm about to lay some sandstone slabs of various sizes on a DPM, three inches of compacted sharp sand, and an inch of mortar. What concerns me though is the grouting/pointing as the mortar could stain the sandstone and i would like to know if there is a way of avoiding this happening. Is it...

    Patio Drainage/Design

Hello everybody. I have an area at the back of my house that i have cleared and built retaining walls around. fortunatley or maybe not a waste water pipe runs through the middle of it to a manhole which i can tap into for the patio runoff water. The question though is: Is there a specific...
