That looks like a spiral balance to me. As was suggested you put your finger in the oval latch and slide towards the centre of the window to disengage. What exactly is the problem with the window?

They can be trimmed down but if you take 2" off the bottom you will cut off the bottom rail. You will have to get this out of the off cut and glue and clamp it back in the door.

Cedar is too soft to use for decking.

Generally it's a lot easier to fix the hooks to a batten and then fix the batten to the wall. The hooks may only have a small screw hole meaning that only a thin screw can be used and also it is harder to get the correct alignment direct into masonry.

I don't know about the structural implications but your cooker looks a long way from any worktop.

There are some specialist worktop repairers out there but it isn't a diy job if you want the repair to be invisible, however you could fit a chopping board or hotrods over the area.

Why not ask the company where they have fitted 70mm and then go and have a look.

Thanks a lot unseen and monkeh. I had seen the loose cable suggested on other forums but I couldn't see why it would work after a reboot. The laptop was an insurance replacement for one that was stolen so I've been in touch with the insurers and they're sorting it out. Once again, many thanks.
