Lighting a garage with no electricity

Gym equipment is quite nickable, so you might want to think about security also if the garage has a window and/or side door. If it's just the front up-and-over then these are quite useful!http://www.screwfix.com/p/garage-defender/79478 But you probably already thought of that!

Hand riveter - dodgy tool or bad workman?

Hi, I have a Forge Steel hand riveter that I use very occasionally. I have a problem in that every time I use the riveter, the steel pin is retained in the riveter. I have to disassemble the plunger/spring/jaw mechanism to remove the pin. It doesn't matter how tight or loose the screw cap...

    Sink waste - conflicting instructions

Hi, I am installing a waste into my kitchen sink. I'm a bit confused by the instructions... The waste comes with a Polyeurythane washer which goes between the waste flange and the sink - ie, in the sink not beneath it. The instructions say, "To ensure a watertight seal, we recommend...

The right screws for oak worksurface?

Hi All, Got a nice 40mm Oak worksurface all cut, joined and oiled. Currently it's just resting on the kitchen units and some wall battening. I need to fix the worksurface to the battening and to the units. I've got stretcher plates and plan to drill oversized holes in the unit front rails...

Smelly Dishwasher/washing machine waste - can I use AAV?

Hi, My washing machine and dishwasher are slightly remote from the kitchen sink. Waste trap for WM/DW consists of a standard sink waste with spigot (DW attached, WM goes in the top), with an intercepting trap beneath. 40mm pipe then follows the wall and under the sink where it joins the main...

Drill my own fixing holes in a cistern???

More "potential" than "imaginary." Would rather mitigate the risk early than have to disassemble.

Drill my own fixing holes in a cistern???

I hadn't even tried at the time of my first post. As it happens, the pan/cistern connecting bolts do hold it securely, although I'm surprised because they're in line left-to-right. Silicon wodged on the back too - job done. Cheers for all advice.

Thanks, silicone it is. Should have thought of that myself

Drill my own fixing holes in a cistern???

I'm fitting a new toilet with a low level cistern. There are no fixing holes in the rear of the cistern for fixing to the wall - the entire thing depends on the bolts holding the cistern to the pan. To me this seems risky - the cistern could be pulled forward with relative ease causing a leak...

wickes babel pedestal - how to fix to the floor?

Thanks for the info. Take your point about the floor, but it's rated for bathroom use. Some friends of ours have had it for several years without a problem. I've made it clear that any spillages need to be mopped up straight away, and no damp mats can be left on the floor. Time will tell!

wickes babel pedestal - how to fix to the floor?

Hi, I'm about to install a new sink in the bathroom, we bought a Wickes Babel sink and full pedestal. The pedestal has no fixing holes on the bottom (nor did it come with any screws etc.) I'm not sure how to proceed, but I can't believe it's supposed to just sit on the floor. Any...

    priming galvanised corner beading?

Hi, I'm renovating the bathroom, and it's time to paint the walls. The window wall and recess was previously tiled, now it's going to be painted. When removing the tiles the corner beading was exposed. How do I prime this? Can I just use wall undercoat as rust should not be an issue with...

Removing dried grout from marble mosaics

Thanks, I'm off to Screwfix this morning anyway, so I'll give it a go.

Removing dried grout from marble mosaics

Yes, I've learnt to my cost not to follow the instructions, which said not to wipe excess grout for 15 mins. That might have been okay on 6 inch ceramics, but not on marble mosaics! I've found that a piece of 1 inch square hardwood cut to a length of about 6 inches, with an angle cut on the...

    Pipe Diameter Advice

If you need more volume in your CW header tank, a cheaper and easier solution is to buy a second, similarly sized tank, and connect it to your existing tank with a bit of 22mm. If you have room. No idea whether this conforms to regs, but it will give you more volume.

Removing dried grout from marble mosaics

Hi, I have recently finished grouting our bath area, which was a long and arduous task as the missus insisted on 25mm mosaics. I did my best during grouting to keep the tiles as clean as possible, but inevitably some grout has dried onto the tiles. Can anybody advise on how to get the...

Shower pump - to flange or not to flange?

Hi, Installing a bar mixer shower with a Stuart Turner 2 bar pump. I have to put the pump in the loft as there is no room on the floor in the airing cupboard or any other accessible position. So I'll be putting in a 350mm anti-gravity loop. I was planning to put in a Surrey Flange (no...
