    Block door with studwork?

The room was originally two rooms, now been knocked into one. At some point we might want to convert it back to two rooms, so it makes sense to leave the casing in place, then all I have to do is replace the architrave to re-establish the door. Whether it's the best approach or not, I just...

    Block door with studwork?

Hi, I've blocked up a doorway using studwork and plasterboard. The doorframe remains (stripped of architrave etc.) and lies about 1mm below the existing plaster around the frame. The plasterboard I've put in lies another 1-2mm below this. My plan is to chisel off the existing paintwork for...

Lifting T&G chipboard - nailed on joists

Both excellent ideas! And I have a Toolstation just down the road from where I work! Think I'll go for the plug-cutter soln to make sure the nails don't exit sideways from the joist... just in case.... Thanks for the advice!

Lifting T&G chipboard - nailed on joists

Hi, I want to lift the floor (chipboard T&G, 8' x 2' x18mm, 16" centres on the joists) in the bedroom to tidy up some wiring (currently running above the skirting in trunking  ). I've run a circular saw along the join to cut out the tongues either side, and managed to get one end up...

    Best way to extend wiring?

So Screwfix items would be okay? I was planning to individually heat shrink the crimps, then also heat shrink the whole lot for neatness. I'm not sure where I can source shrink that's big enough to cover three crimps though. The light isn't going back up. I'm trying to save electricity :D...

    Best way to extend wiring?

Still more expensive and bulky than crimp connectors! Also look more 'bodgy' when one is not actually splitting or switching. IMHO... But what I really want to know is - can I use connectors that I bought for car wiring, for mains wiring? Screwfix (for example) don't make a distinction in...

    Best way to extend wiring?

ColJack, the connection will be accessible, it just seems like a rather bulky solution to just extend the wiring. I could replace the run to the next light in its entirety, but it's up in the loft and I don't really want to go lifting all the insulation if I can help it even though I know it's...

    Best way to extend wiring?

Hi, I need to take a loop-in pendant out of my wiring circuit, which means that the follow-on wiring now needs to connect directly to the previous circuit wiring. What's the best way to do this? A junction box seems like an expensive and bulky way to simply join two T&E cables. I...

    Vent kit pre-cavity insulation

Hi All, Chap came around to quote for cavity insulation yesterday. I wasn't home so he spoke to my wife - apparently I need a couple of vents to meet building regs - one in the kitchen where the boiler is (current one is not up to spec) and one in the lounge where we have an open fire. I'm...

    Calling all Sparks...

That was my only reason for querying. I don't doubt that it's a skilled job with lots of overheads and I don't mean to belittle it. I just was trying to understand the WAG quote I was given, in my own antagonistic way  I didn't mean to imply that, I was simply hazarding a guess at the...

    Calling all Sparks...

Okay, I'm starting to understand where some of the cost is coming now. But that's not necessarily a good thing. Holmslaw's explanation was very enlightening. An hour to unplug all the appliances and bulbs @ 1 hour. I firmly believe I could do my 4-bed detached house in less than 15 mins...

    Calling all Sparks...

Maybe you can explain it then. There are two tails coming in from the meter. There are up to about 12 circuits to reconnect to the new CU (only 6 in my case). A couple of drill holes, wall plugs and screws to fix the new unit to the wall. Then some testing using some high-tech equipment. And...

    Calling all Sparks...

Wow - I thought it might be a couple of hundred, but £500 - £1000??? What hourly rate does that work out at? It's only connecting the tails and the existing wiring, then running some tests? I don't see how that would take more than three hours or so. I realise that there's some specialist...

    Calling all Sparks...

All, My wife was chatting to her friend yesterday, whose son recently jammed his finger into a bulbless table lamp and got a shock. He's fine, but my wife now has a bee in her bonnet about installing a modern RCD consumer unit in place of the old 6-fuse box. Can anybody give me a ballpark...

    Broadband drop-out when phone rings

I know that's the theory. But in practice, the problem hasn't occurred since I put the filter in. Not saying it won't, just that it hasn't so far. I've still got some more to do - if I get time tonight I'll plug an OEM extension cable into the NTE5 test socket and check that. If there's still...

    Broadband drop-out when phone rings

Hi all, thanks for the info. I can't put the router on the master socket as it's in the hall and the cabling won't reach. Instead I have a ~5ft extension from the back of the NTE5 to the ADSL Splitter socket, which goes through the wall into the lounge. There's one other extension which goes...

    Broadband drop-out when phone rings

Well, I finally got round to looking at this :D I disconnected all but terminals 2 and 5 between a new NTE5 and the filter plate. The NTE5 now connects just to the orange and white wires from the drop line. The phone just rang... and my broadband dropped out. Anybody got any more clues?

    Floor varnish on doors?

Hi, Is there any reason why I shouldn't use Ronseal floor varnish on doors? Just that I'm unable to find coloured "non-floor" varnish in tins bigger than 1 litre, which is cost-prohibitive when I've got 9 doors to do! Thanks J

    Varnish 'bulk' buy

Hi all, I hope someone can help me! I've fitted 10 new doors in our place, they're untreated pine. My wife and I (well, I was there) chose the colour we (she) wants them to be varnished, which is matt Light Oak. Trouble is, our local B+Q only does Ronseal Light Oak in 750ml tins - and I think...

    Broadband drop-out when phone rings

There are six terminals on the filter. I didn't get the chance to play with it this weekend :-(
