    Solar Photovoltaic Microgeneration.

Thanks to all who tried to answer my original post in a considered way; not least to BAS who managed in his inimitable manner to insult all whose views he doesn't share. Tell me BAS, have you always been so offensive, or did it require years of practice? It seems to me that this is a...

    Solar Photovoltaic Microgeneration.

Can I ask how many systems you've installed, how long you have been doing this work and what a typical cost per installed KwHp would be?

    Solar Photovoltaic Microgeneration.

Has anybody got experience of these solar pv microgeneration systems systems, either as an installer or as a client? Without the benefit of the feed in tariff, it seems that they would be totally uneconomic but the feed in rate seems to make it a practical proposition as the payment is made per...

    Part P and building control

Just a thought guys. What benefit does all this argument bring to people who want to use this forum for its intended purpose, which I naively thought was about diy? All that is apparent is an attempt to justify some huge egos. The rest of us are totally mystified. Can I suggest that you study...

    Double Sockets - MK's position

Boring? Well maybe. Arrogant? I don't think so. And whatever his faults, John W2 has far better manners than many contributors to this site.

Residual Current Protection and all that!

What I was trying to establish was whether there was a necessity for RCD protection as opposed to a desirability I thought that I had understood from the responses that RCD protection was essential. Now I am not so sure. (Not that it will change my recommendation to my son to add RCD protection.)

Residual Current Protection and all that!

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I think that replacement of the CU to give some spare ways and to provide residual current protection on all circuits might be the most sensible-and future proof option. One last point; referring to my original post-what documentation should my son expect to...

Residual Current Protection and all that!

Thanks for replies so far. Let me make sure I have understood correctly. An alteration to an existing circuit brings all of that circuit within the remit of the 17th edition. Is that correct? Therefore, it will be necessary to protect that circuit at its origin, in order to provide the...

Residual Current Protection and all that!

My son, who lives in a 1960s bungalow is revamping the lounge. To this end, he wants to install two additional double sockets. His local electrical contractor has advised him that these sockets, and therefore the circuit to which they will be added require residual current protection. My...

    Why You Don't Work Live

Get a new dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary describes electrocution as to die accidentally as a result of electric shock or to be put to death as in US judicial punishment. No one who was electrocuted ever lived to tell the tale.

    socket covers a shock hazard

I think this subject may have been covered on here before. Basically the sockets fitted in British homes have a an interlock mechanism which shutters the live and neutral terminals of the socket. The only way these shutters can be opened is by inserting the earth pin from a standard plug into...

Can I use the garage circuit to provide power to the garden?

What a precious lot you are- especially you BAS. And there's me thinking this was a forum for DIY electrics. Ah well. I guess I was wrong; it's a forum for divas.

    17th stuff, 3rd time lucky

I write merely as an occasional DIYer. All this business about conforming to 17th edition washes way above my head. May I ask a simple question? If I asked any of you professionals to install a new consumer unit in my property, would you be prepared to do it if the replacement CU provided an...

    Part P dilemma

If you need to ask, you aren't as smart as you think you are. If an OP asks a question, you aren't going to win any respect for your opinions by telling him to **** off. There aren't any stupid questions- only stupid answers

    Part P dilemma

The thing is, Industryspark, that we have a few recent recruits to this forum who are good barrack room lawyers. They'll explain the minutiae of "the regulations" to you and then they'll bad mouth you for having the impertinence to ask the question in the first place. This is a country where I...

    appliance isolaters

What a bunch of pedants you lot are. You seem to spend all your time arguing amongst each other. I thought the main purpose of this forum was to provide general and reliable help and advice to DIY posters. They must leave here more confused than ever. How can you inspire confidence when you...

    Non-Picture Of The Week 2!

And the moral of the story is that a good amateur can do a better job than a bad professional. Unfortunately, a bad professional can issue an EIC whereas a good amateur can't.

    Interesting post on SF

A number of different thoughts come to mind some of them admittedly a bit disjointed. 1) Awareness of Part P may be high amongst those who are qualified and posters to this forum, but I imagine it is very low or unheard of amongst the general public. 2) LABC's though charged with enforcing the...

Consumer stuff on the suppliers board

Softus, because this is a forum on electrics rather than etymology, it is probably better not to push too far. Of course you are correct in saying that a crime is any breach of the criminal law. My point was to warn against the frequent application of the word to our everyday actions. Once upon...
