The remote control fob can be affected by strong radio signals from other sources. These include close proximity to a Police staion, hospital or taxi office etc. It's a very common problem.

Micky, I'm a Patrol with a motoring organisation and have seen plebty of Punto ECU failures. We don't see so many now, but they're easy to check using a noid light or L.E.D testlamp. Don't use a bulb type testlamp as the current draw for the bulb is too much for the ECU, and can blow it.

Thanks for your replies, the model number was on a small oval plate on the front of the unit, which covers the screw to remove the cover. I'll have another look tomorrow. If it was a device to prevent the unit from operating with the cover off, why would it be hot when the plunger is pressed...
