    damp question

masona, that's a clever little think! Worth looking at. :)

    damp question

Sounds like condensation to me (like most damp problems...). Good ventilation is the best help! Especially in a bathroom. Fit an extractor fan, keep the window open when you're having a shower (and for a while afterwards), keep the door (assuming you aren't too shy! ;)) open when showering. I...

    new hardwood windows questions

I couldn't belive PVC was being used in UK for windows and doors when I moved to UK for Sweden. It's quite a nasty material, and when it ages it goes all brittle and falls to bits. It's nice to see some people are looking at the wood option! It gives the house more character as well. :) My...

    Laminate expansion gap

Rip them off mate...sorry, but that's the only way if you don't want to use some form of edging strip. I agree the laminate edging strips look like crap. I've used plain quarter staff in the past, and just stained it matching to the floor (see attached picture of cherry floor). That way it...

plasterboard - reply needed before 5pm!!!

The room was about 4x2 m as I understand, so you should be able to cover the celing using 2 sheets of 2400x1200 mm plasterboard. I'd use tapered edge since you'll get one joint in the middle, and with tapered edge boards you will get a smooth fit. You'll also need some board joint tape. And...

    POLL! biscuits in worktop joint

Jaffa Cakes definitely, they got the right spongy feeling. The chocolate on them might be an issue if inserted incorrectly in the joint. Therefore, you should hire a proper tradesman for a job like this! - Digestive's dig in too much - Hob Nob's are too knobbly - Twix too twitchy - Cliub...

    MFI

The IKEA kitchens have actually had very good reviews as I understand. I'm actually considering the shaker style birch one they do myself! :) Credit to them for actually using 20mm particle board for the carcasses...compared to 18mm for MFI or B&Q...and real veneer instead of that plastic...

    What Boiler

The Worcester range is pretty nice, they have some combi's with built in 3.5 l hot water tanks. Which I think is about a reasonable compromise between have a 'proper' combi, and having a separate hot water cylinder. As somebody said above about BG boilers. I only know their condensing one...

    Seagrass carpet in staircase?

Hi, I'm thinking of fitting a seagrass carpet in my staircase, but I'm not sure it's suitable. Has anybody got any experiance of doing it? Should you use an underlay? Is it best to glue it to the underlay? (I suspect staples will look a bit odd...)? Greatful for any input. :)

    Re-wiring Appliances from Europe.....?

I'll have to disagree with this... - The very old system used to be: 130V/220V, 1-phase/3-phase. - It was changed a long time ago to 220V/380V, 1-phase/3-phase. - It has since been harmonised to 230V/400V, 1-phase/3-phase. See section 313.1.0 in "Starkströmsföreskrifterna" (1999...

    German Oven Installation

Only thing?? What about the hardcore then?? As I understand it you can use brown, black, or grey for the live in a single phase system. As a matter of fact if you have 3-phase in the house, and you connect up a single phase socket the live should be the same colour as the phase...

    German Oven Installation

This is actually already a standard, used in Scandinavia. Looks like this: http://www.elbutik.se/group.htm?category_id=1496

Thanks ban-all-sheds! I was correct about the colour coding then. :)

    German Oven Installation

I've never worked in Germany, but used to work as an electrician in Sweden where the system is very much the same. It's 3-phase for ovens in general, the reason is you can use 4x2.5mm2 (only 13A fuses) instead of 2x10mm2 (is that correct??) with one 30A fuse. If it's a newly built house it...

    Re-wiring Appliances from Europe.....?

I'm a bit confused about this... Adam, are you sure grey can be used as earth? I though green/yellow was being harmonised through out. I'd guess a three wire black/brown/grey would be for 3-phase delta wiring, which used to be blue/brown/black. To break out blue. Or am I way off? Most...

    Fitting a hearth

To cut the laminate floor in place you could use a circular saw, and set the cutting depth to the thickness of the laminate.

    Size of gas pipes?

I agree, 1500+VAT for all other parts (TRV's, building material, 2y guarantee(!), etc.) + the work is not bad really. As I understood 2 people for ~2 days. I know you can get cheaper condensing boilers, but getting 2 years guarantee is worth quite a bit I think! stulew, DP, you're almost...

    Size of gas pipes?

    It's a Worcester-Bosch, and the price includes installation...so it's not outrageous. But I'm getting 3 different quotes, and then I'll pick. :)

    Size of gas pipes?

Thanks CH4! :) That explains it perfectly. It's ~15-20m from the meter to where the boiler is going, so 22 mm pipes make sense.

    Size of gas pipes?

What is the required size of the gas pipe for a new installation of a condensing combi? I'm looking att replacing my old system boiler, and the guy I had around last week for a quote said I had to replace my old gas pipe with 22 mm ones. Just curious...since it looks pretty expensive to do it...
