    Door hanging(inside out)

Hi Everyone, I have taken up an offer of hanging 3 front doors with new frames. Here is the tricky bit. The guy wants them opening outwards so that they can't get kicked in so easily. Are there any obvious problems that I will face? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Cast iron fireplace with crack

Hi Jingles, Personally I would fill the gap with Chemical Metal, the type of stuff you get in 2 tubes, mix them to activate, then fill the gap. Make sure you get all or most of the excess off while it is still wet because it's a bugger to sand down. I would, when dry and you are happy with the...

Trying to connect TV, DVD Recorder and Satellite

Hi Everyone, I have a panasonic TV and a DVD Recorder and I'm trying to connect them to the satellite box using scart leads. I have no TV aerial so I need to record from satellite broadcast. They have all been rigged up before but never really worked. All I can record is what i am watching. The...

Can you take your shoes off

Have you ever worked in someone's house and they insist they you take your shoes off. I was fitting fireplaces and we turned up at this blokes house to fit one in an upstairs bedroom. The first thing he said was we would have to take our shoes off. We presumed he was joking. 'No' he said...

    Fitting a fireplace

Hi MPB, I used to install fireplaces, solid fuel or gas, and we used to lay the hearth on a concrete mix of sand with lime in it and cement. I think in your case a normal mix of sand and cement would be fine. It will not be kicking out as much heat as a solid fuel fire I would have thought.

    Installing a firebasket

Hi, I used to install fireplaces. For a basket like you say, we would just make sure the chamber area was sound and repoint if necessary. Some people would want the chamber rendered but thats purely asthetical. But the chimney wouldn't need to be lined as long as it is sound i.e no holes up its...

    Non-slip Floor Paint

Hello everybody, I have a small concreted front garden that is painted a lovely grey with floor paint. In the rain it becomes a bit of a death trap. My girlfriend treats patients from home and the last thing she wants is someone falling **** over ***. I think my only option is to redo it. Does...

    Back Pain

I think Osteopathy is the way to go. A lot more empathic than a chiropractor who seem to crash, bang, wallop on the bones and see you later. My Osteopath spends about 45 minutes doing deep tissue massage and only cracks me if necessary. Some problems build up over years so it is unlikely that a...

    Wallpaper on render

Hi Everyone, I have a chimney breast wall that I have to patch the lower half of with render to meet the old plaster just above the fireplace level. Now I dont do plastering but can get the render pretty darn flat. I then want to lining paper it with some thick gauge paper. Will the paper...

    Student Noise

Thanks everyone. They were strangely quiet last night but that could be for a number of reasons. It might die down and I'll put it down to youthful exuberance at the start of term, but who knows. It may be a different set of students who are louder than the rest. Even when they are not partying...

    Student Noise

nice idea, but I dread to think what the peasants would do in retaliation. I'm not really looking for a war. My neighbour on the other side who lives there with his family is the Knock Down The Door And Firebomb The Place sort of guy but I'm a bit more tactful. Unfortunately that doesn't...

    Student Noise

Hi Everyone, I unfortunately live next to 4 student houses. In the 4 years weve lived there the neighbouring house, which contains about 6 students has been fairly quiet with no cause for us to complain. However the new bunch have been giving us a lot of grief over the last month that theyve...

    New fire back

Hi, There are a whole host of answers to this. Is the brickwork either side exposed as a finish or has all the plaster been hacked off. It looks fairly narrow so a small bedroom grate could go in. This is the type thats a cast fireback and shelf attached. It can be put straight up to the...

    Anyone heard of interlocking plasterboard?

Hi, I have a ceiling thats very lumpy and bumpy. We are soon to sell so I want a quick fix and to avoid having it plastered. Plasterboarding would be good but am worried about dodgy joins. Someone told me that interlocking plasterboard exists that would keep the joins good and level but ive...

its only some kitchen spotlights, how hard can it be.

I have just connected my lights as you suggested. I had to guess which neutral to put the live sleeve on. It worked first time. I reckon I have spent about 6 hours on and off mucking about with it. Superb. Cheers.

its only some kitchen spotlights, how hard can it be.

I am trying to connect a new 4 bulb spotlight in my kitchen. Through the ceiling comes 2 cables obviously each with an earth, live and neutral. I have tested the live but only one of the red cables is. When I disconnected the old single lamp that we had there I am sure that one of the...
