    Weird Hotpoint WD420 washer

Well done you, and well done Hotpoint (as was owned by GEC) ) only the 1st set of bearings in 16 years? My 22 year old one WM51 has had 4 sets so far, and 2 motors - not - cos they burn out but 'cos the bearings become noisy and you can't replace the one on the commuator end of the rotor...

LED tube to replace fluorescent tube in existing batten

Hi, hope it's OK to piggyback onto this thread as it's still 'warm'.... About 3 years ago, a brother of mine, a bit of an experimenter, was playing around with electronic ballasts, and he reckoned that with them, fluo tubes gave an increased light output compared with traditional ballasts...

    ceiling rose

Talking of ceiling roses, I fitted 2 recently, the 1st being an MK one the 2nd a BG one. I must say, the BG one is much better designed, the fixing screw holes for the ceiling are offset from the centre, a brilliant idea 'cos the wires above the ceiling always come thro' a hole right against...

Daylight led 1541 lumen bulbs where have they gone?

It's just that bulbs with all-over brightness like those are much better than the half-light half-shroud ones that are available now.... Also the daylight output is.... is.... (wait for it.....)..... Brilliant!

Daylight led 1541 lumen bulbs where have they gone?

Hi All, can't seem to find these excellent very white light slightly larger than the standard gls bulb, that gives a light output from the whole bulb, not just the bottom half. I find them great in bathroom and workshop alike. Used to find them in Asda and Wilko,... not any more... anyone know why?

    Death of a Workmate

Re the Ron Hickman designed WM, I saw a hybrid version yesterday that had the blue tubular steel body, but the aluminium legs. I told the owner of its Lotus heritage, thanks to this site...

    Death of a Workmate

Re the original 1972 Workmate, as pictured with aluminium frame, at that time, B&D made two versions, I had the cheaper blue steel framed version, and still have and use it regularly. I dislike the 'modern' version like the OP has got, 'cos I find the way the legs fold out annoying and the...

Freezer door has too much vacuum

The seal has a built in magnet, but if you open it twice in short succession then the 2nd opening has the extra grab of the suction too. Is it hard to open on a 1st time opening?

    Vintage electric sewing machine.

Leave as is. How is a wire going to come loose all by itself and touch the sewing machine? The motor will be double insulated - look for the double-insulated symbol on it. As long as the wiring isn't old rubber insulated - which disintegrates - replace it in that case.

Repressurizing the boiler with external filling loop

No to WD40! you need to use a large enough screwdriver too else you'll chew up the slot.

A New Boiler? Buy now, or wait till next year?

However, old boilers - dumb ones with no electronics - have nothing really to fail in them 'cept the gas valve. Piezo igniters and thermocouples seem to soldier on indefinitely.

    Sticking Dual Flush System.

Bleach won't remove limescale tho'. Are you in a hard water area anyway? I use Kilrock Gel limescale remover or white vinegar/acetic acid - both cheap options.

Please identify the pipe coming up from my hallway flooring. Image included.

So. If it is an Edwardian house, I know old houses most likely would have had gas lighting of some kind, mantles and stuff. Is it poss that there used to be a wall adjacent to that pipe... Seems strange that it's in tne middle of the floor like that.

Is this an old gas tap? Can I cut it off?

Do any of your neighbours have a similar house... If yes, then can you ask if they have something similar. Also, what IS your earthing arrangement - in case it IS the earth rod?

Please identify the pipe coming up from my hallway flooring. Image included.

Wow! I'm guessing the wire is an earth wire! Whether the 'pipe' is an earth rod, or a gas/water pipe that has to be earthed,.... what is used to block the top of the pipe thing... looks like cement or plaster or is there something underneath the cement/plaster you can chip off? Does that wire...
